Description

Weingut Emrich-Schönleber Riesling Mineral 2023 is a quintessential expression of this Nahe estate’s precise, terroir-driven style. Sourced from the younger vines of the famed Halenberg vineyard, it showcases clarity, finesse, and a quietly confident character rather than overt power. Built on quartzite and blue slate, this Riesling captures the stony depth and cool elegance that have made Emrich-Schönleber one of Germany’s benchmark producers for dry Riesling.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Riesling Mineral is pale lemon with green reflections, signaling youthful freshness and vibrancy. The nose is understated yet complex: delicate herbal spice, a touch of earthiness, and a subtle smoky, flinty minerality form the core, with white peach and citrus notes emerging gently in the background. On the palate, the wine is juicy and mouth-watering, yet completely focused and linear. The trademark Emrich-Schönleber purism comes through in its precise acidity, clean fruit profile, and a texture that offers a light, silky creaminess without ever feeling heavy. Flavors of citrus zest, stone fruit and wet stone unfold into a long, finely etched finish with a pronounced mineral echo—true to its name, the minerality is the final word. Enjoyable in its youth for its tension and brightness, it will gain further nuance and complexity over the next 3–6 years.

Production
The Riesling Mineral 2023 is grown on the quartzite and blue slate soils of the younger parcels in the renowned Halenberg vineyard in the Nahe, a site known for producing particularly detailed, mineral-driven wines. The stony, well-drained slopes and the region’s cool climate help preserve acidity and aromatic finesse in the grapes. Harvest is typically carried out by hand to ensure careful selection of perfectly ripe, healthy fruit. In the cellar, Emrich-Schönleber favors a gentle, minimalist approach: delicate pressing, controlled fermentations—usually in stainless steel and/or large neutral vessels—and extended time on fine lees to enhance texture, purity, and the clear expression of site without masking oak influence.

Food & Serving
This Riesling’s taut structure and mineral backbone make it a versatile partner at the table. It pairs beautifully with delicately prepared seafood such as grilled prawns, steamed mussels, ceviche, or sushi, as well as light poultry dishes, fresh goat cheese, and vegetable-focused plates featuring asparagus, fennel, or fresh herbs. Spicy Asian cuisine—especially dishes with ginger, lemongrass, or mild chilies—also finds a superb counterpoint in its crisp acidity and subtle fruit. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F). Decanting is not essential, but pouring the wine into a carafe 20–30 minutes before serving can help the restrained aromatics to open up.

Producer
Weingut Emrich-Schönleber is a family-run estate based in Monzingen in Germany’s Nahe region, and has steadily risen over recent decades to become one of the country’s top addresses for dry Riesling. The family has been cultivating vines here for generations, but it is under the guidance of Werner and his son Frank Schönleber that the winery has gained international acclaim. Their meticulously farmed, steep vineyards—especially the grand cru sites Halenberg and Frühlingsplätzchen—are celebrated for producing Rieslings of remarkable precision, elegance and mineral depth. Consistently high ratings from leading wine critics and inclusion in Germany’s elite producer rankings underline Emrich-Schönleber’s status as a reference estate for Nahe terroir and modern, finely chiseled German Riesling.
