Description
Once a modest workhorse grape, Müller-Thurgau rarely gets to show this much character. In the hands of Bianka and Daniel Schmitt, this 2021 orange wine from Rheinhessen reveals just how compelling and textural “Müller” can be. Certified organic and crafted without added sulphur or filtration, it’s a striking, skin-fermented white that challenges expectations and rewards the curious drinker.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Müller-Thurgau Bio 2021 pours a deep, hazy golden hue with orange reflections, a clear sign of extended skin contact and minimal intervention. The nose is immediately expressive and distinctive: green tea, lemongrass and pink grapefruit lead the way, supported by notes of fresh herbs such as marjoram and a gentle lift of lavender and wildflowers.
On the palate, the wine is dry, grippy and layered, with a firm yet finely textured tannic structure from the maceration on the skins. Flavours of elderflower, grapefruit zest and citrus pith are joined by subtle herbal and tea-like nuances, giving a long, slightly saline finish. The acidity is moderate but energetic enough to keep the wine precise and refreshing, while the tannins provide shape and food-friendliness. Enjoy it now for its vivid aromatics and structure, or cellar it for 3–6 years to allow the components to knit further and the savory, tea-like notes to deepen.
Production
Sourced from organically farmed vineyards in Rheinhessen, this Müller-Thurgau grows on classic rolling hills with mixed soils that typically include loess, clay and limestone, giving both fragrance and a gentle backbone to the fruit. Harvesting is done by hand to ensure only healthy, ripe bunches are selected. In the cellar, 50% of the grapes are pressed directly, while the remaining 50% macerate on the skins for about five weeks, extracting colour, tannin and aromatic complexity. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts, and the wine is then aged in large, neutral wooden vats to preserve purity and texture. It is bottled unfiltered and without added sulphur, resulting in a living, authentic expression of Müller-Thurgau and its Rheinhessen terroir.
Food & Serving
This orange Müller-Thurgau is highly versatile at the table, especially with dishes that can meet its gentle tannins and herbal-citrus profile. It pairs beautifully with Middle Eastern or Mediterranean cuisine—think mezze platters, hummus, baba ganoush, grilled halloumi, or spiced vegetable dishes. It also works well with Asian-inspired flavours like lemongrass chicken, miso-glazed vegetables, aromatic curries with coconut milk, or sushi featuring fatty fish and pickled elements. Serve at 10–12°C, slightly cooler than a light red but warmer than a conventional crisp white. A short decant of 15–30 minutes, or simply letting the wine open in the glass, helps it shed initial reduction and fully reveal its layers of tea, citrus and herbs.
