Description

Weinberghof Fritsch’s Pinot Noir Ruppersthal 2023 is a graceful, red-fruited Austrian Pinot that combines charm, freshness, and finesse with a beautifully judged touch of oak. Sourced from old vines in the Wagram region, it reflects Karl Fritsch’s skill not only with white wines, but also with reds of real character and delicacy. The wine is named after Ruppersthal, the municipality, while the fruit comes from the Exlberg parcel, where Löss soils help shape its pure, aromatic style.

Tasting Notes
Bright and inviting in the glass, this Pinot Noir shows the elegance you want from the variety: red cherries, strawberries, and pomegranate lifted by floral and herbal notes. Layers of green leaf, red rose, clove, and mocha add complexity, while the oak remains subtle and well integrated. On the palate it is juicy, airy, and highly drinkable, with lively acidity and soft tannins that gently frame the fruit. Candied cherries, wild strawberries, and dried cranberries mingle with rosehip, fresh earth, and tarragon, while hints of moka, Asian spice, and bitter chocolate linger in the background. The finish is long, fresh, and fruit-driven, with enough structure to enjoy now and the balance to develop nicely over the next few years.

Production
The grapes come exclusively from the Exlberg vineyard in Ruppersthal, where Fritsch owns a parcel of 25-year-old vines rooted in characteristic Löss soils of Wagram. Fruit is harvested by hand, sorted on arrival at the winery, and then fully destemmed before fermentation. The wine is biodynamically certified (BIODYN) and made with a natural approach from vineyard to bottle, with spontaneous fermentation using only indigenous yeasts. It is then matured for 12 months in used 500-liter oak barrels before bottling.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile Pinot Noir that works beautifully with roast chicken, duck, veal, mushroom risotto, salmon, or earthy vegetable dishes. It is best served slightly chilled at around 14–16°C. Decanting is not necessary, but a short aeration in the glass can help the wine open up and show its aromatic detail.

Producer
Weinberghof Fritsch is one of the standout names in Wagram, known especially for precise, terroir-driven white wines, but also for reds that show surprising depth and elegance. Karl Fritsch’s biodynamic philosophy is central to the estate’s identity, shaping a style that is natural, expressive, and highly respectful of the vineyard. The winery has earned a strong reputation for authenticity and quality, and this Pinot Noir is a fine example of that broader craft.
