Description

Created to mark Warre’s 350th anniversary, this limited-edition 2010 Vintage Port is one of the house’s most rare and collectible releases. Sourced exclusively from 80–100-year-old vines in the steep terraces of the Douro, it combines extraordinary concentration with Warre’s hallmark elegance and floral finesse. With only 2,400 bottles produced and “Vinhas Velhas” proudly noted on the label, it stands as a historic tribute to Portugal’s oldest British Port house and to centuries of Douro viticulture.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Warre’s 2010 Vintage 350th Anniversary Port shows a deep, opaque ruby core with youthful purple highlights clinging to the rim—densely colored, yet brilliantly alive. The nose is strikingly perfumed: violets and rose petals lift from the glass, intertwined with ripe blackberries, cassis and wild blueberries, supported by notes of dark chocolate, licorice, crushed stone and a touch of exotic spice. On the palate, the wine is powerful, structured and impeccably balanced. Intense, sweet black fruits—black cherry, plum and blueberry compote—unfold in layers, carried by a firm backbone of ripe tannins that are fine-grained yet authoritative. There is a beautiful interplay between Warre’s signature floral character and the depth derived from very old vines, giving extra dimension and length. Hints of cocoa, fig, and a savory mineral edge linger on a very long, precise finish. Still youthful and tightly knit, this Vintage Port has enormous aging potential and will develop added complexity, silkier texture and tertiary notes (dried fruits, tobacco, spice and truffle) over several decades. Properly cellared, it will reward patience for 40–60 years or more.

Production
The fruit for this cuvée comes from some of the Douro Valley’s most dramatic schist and granite terraces, cut into the steep hillsides that rise above the Douro River in the Alto Douro. For this special “Vinhas Velhas” release, Warre’s selected only parcels of 80–100-year-old vines at their two flagship quintas, Quinta da Cavadinha and Quinta do Retiro. Yields are naturally tiny, and in this bottling grapes from roughly three old vines are needed to produce a single bottle. Harvest is done entirely by hand on the vertiginous stone-walled terraces, with strict bunch selection in the vineyard and at the winery. The traditional Douro varieties—Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Cão—are vinified in the classic Porto style with a short, intense maceration to extract color, tannin and aroma, followed by fortification with high-quality grape spirit. The young Port then matures for approximately 24 months in seasoned oak casks in the cool cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, before being bottled unfiltered to preserve its full character and long-term aging capacity.

Food & Serving
This 2010 Vintage Port is best enjoyed with richly flavored, mature cheeses such as Stilton, Roquefort or aged Portuguese cheeses, as well as with dark chocolate desserts, flourless chocolate cake or fig and nut tarts. It also shines as a contemplative after-dinner wine, served on its own with roasted nuts and dried fruits. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in a good-sized Port or small Bordeaux glass to allow the bouquet to unfold. Decanting is essential—both to remove the natural sediment and to help the young wine open up; for current drinking, plan on 3–4 hours in a decanter, and even longer for those who prefer a softer, more evolved profile.

Producer
Founded in 1670, Warre’s is the oldest British Port house and one of the great historic names of the Douro, playing a pivotal role in establishing Port as one of the world’s classic fortified wines. From its early days, the house recognized the importance of careful maturation, building its own lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia to age and refine its wines under ideal Atlantic-influenced conditions. Today, Warre’s is owned and run by the Symington family, who count 13 generations of continuous involvement in the Port trade and hold more premium vineyard land in the Douro than any other family. Warre’s is renowned for its fragrant, elegant yet structured Vintage Ports, and it is the only Port house entitled to display “By Appointment to the Royal Household” on its labels—an acknowledgment of its enduring quality and stature in the region.
