Description
Warre's Otima 10 Years Tawny in this impressive 3-liter format brings together contemporary presentation and centuries of Port tradition. Crafted from classic Douro grapes and aged to a perfect 10-year maturity, it offers a beautifully balanced style that’s both refined and irresistibly approachable. Ideal for gatherings, celebrations, or slow enjoyment over time, this large-format bottle showcases why Otima helped redefine tawny Port for a modern audience, without losing any of Warre’s historic character.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Warre’s Otima 10 Years Tawny shows a bright amber-tawny color with golden highlights and a clear, polished brilliance that reflects its careful aging. The nose is generous and complex, with notes of dried apricot, orange peel, roasted nuts, and caramel, layered with hints of fig, toffee, warm spice, and a subtle touch of vanilla from long cask maturation.
On the palate, this is a medium-bodied, elegant tawny with a fine, velvety texture. Flavors of dried fruits, almonds, hazelnuts, and butterscotch unfold alongside delicate baking spices and a gentle citrus lift, giving freshness to the rich, mellow sweetness. The finish is long, nutty, and beautifully balanced, with enough acidity to keep it lively and moreish. As a 10-year tawny, it is ready to drink upon release and will hold its character for a long period once opened, especially kept cool and properly sealed, though it is best enjoyed within a few weeks to capture its most vibrant aromatics.
Production
Sourced from select vineyards in Portugal’s Douro Valley, Warre’s Otima 10 Years Tawny draws on steep, schistous terraces that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor in the traditional Port grapes Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional. Grapes are picked at optimal ripeness, often harvested by hand on the rugged slopes, then fermented under controlled conditions with the addition of grape spirit to halt fermentation and preserve natural sweetness. The young wine is aged in seasoned oak casks in the cool lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia, where a blend of different vintages—each aged an average of 10 years—are carefully assembled to achieve Otima’s trademark style of freshness, complexity, and smooth, nutty maturity.
Food & Serving
This 10-year tawny is an excellent match for classic desserts such as crème brûlée, nut tarts, almond cake, bread-and-butter pudding, or desserts featuring caramel, toffee, or dried fruits. It also pairs beautifully with blue cheeses like Stilton or Roquefort, aged hard cheeses, and a simple plate of toasted nuts and dried figs. Serve slightly chilled, around 10–14°C (50–57°F), to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. Decanting is not necessary for a 10-year tawny, but pouring gently into a clean carafe just before serving can help open up the aromas, especially with a large-format bottle.
Producer
Founded in 1670, Warre’s is recognized as the first British Port house established in Portugal, and it has played a pioneering role in the development of fine Port for more than three centuries. From early on, Warre’s invested in its own lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia, underscoring the importance of careful aging and blending to create great Port wines. Today, the house is owned and managed by the Symington family, who have been involved in the Port trade for 13 generations and own more premium vineyards in the Douro Valley than any other single family. Warre’s holds the distinction of being the only Port producer entitled to bear the title of Royal Warrant holder, a mark of its longstanding reputation and quality at the very top of the region’s producers.
