Description

Voerzio Barolo La Serra 2019 is a precise, polished expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barolo’s most esteemed modernists, Roberto Voerzio. Sourced from the high, breezy La Serra cru in La Morra, this is a Barolo that marries intensity with remarkable finesse and fragrance. The 2019 vintage, celebrated in Piemonte for its balance and classic structure, gives this wine both immediate appeal and serious aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Voerzio Barolo La Serra 2019 shows a luminous garnet hue with the characteristic orange-tinged rim of Nebbiolo, still bright and youthful but already hinting at its future evolution. The nose is finely etched and highly aromatic: rose petals, violets, wild strawberry and raspberry, followed by blood orange, anise, sweet tobacco, and hints of sandalwood and crushed limestone. On the palate, the wine is silky yet vertical, with La Serra’s hallmark elegance and lift. Red cherry, pomegranate, and raspberry are layered with notes of tea leaf, licorice, dried herbs, and subtle spice from carefully managed oak. The tannins are ultra-fine and chalky, tightly knit but not aggressive, supported by fresh, persistent acidity that keeps the wine vibrant and long on the finish. This 2019 has the structure to age gracefully for 15–20+ years, gradually gaining tertiary notes of truffle, underbrush, and leather while retaining its floral core.

Production
La Serra is a high-altitude cru in La Morra, characterized by poor, calcareous marls and a cooler, breezier exposure that naturally favors finesse, aromatic lift, and refined tannins. Roberto Voerzio is renowned for extremely low yields through green harvesting, meticulous bunch selection, and hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness to achieve concentration without heaviness. In the cellar, the grapes are gently crushed and undergo a careful, temperature-controlled fermentation and maceration to extract fine tannins and pure fruit rather than aggressive structure. The wine is then aged in a combination of French oak (with a restrained proportion of new barrels) and larger neutral wood before a period of bottle refinement, allowing the cru’s character to shine through with clarity and precision.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes: think braised veal shank, roast lamb with rosemary, truffle risotto, tajarin with rich meat ragù, or aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano and mature Pecorino. It also works beautifully with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and earthy autumn vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Barolo stems to allow the bouquet to fully unfold. Decanting for 2–3 hours in its youth is recommended to soften the tannins and open the aromatics; with more bottle age, a gentle 1-hour decant is sufficient to remove sediment and let the wine breathe.

Producer
Roberto Voerzio, based in La Morra in Piemonte’s Barolo zone, is widely regarded as one of the leading figures of the region’s modern renaissance. Since founding his estate in the 1980s, Voerzio has championed extremely low yields, obsessive vineyard work, and a meticulous, quality-first approach that has set new benchmarks for density, purity, and finesse in Barolo. His holdings include some of the most coveted crus in the area, and La Serra is among his flagship bottlings, prized for its aromatic delicacy and refined structure. Over the years, Roberto Voerzio has earned a reputation as a star producer, consistently receiving top scores and international recognition, and his wines are sought after by collectors and Nebbiolo enthusiasts around the world.
