Description

Vite Colte Barolo del Comune di Barolo Essenze 2017 is a classic, village-designated Barolo that captures the essence of the historic Barolo commune in a single, beautifully balanced wine. Crafted from 100% Nebbiolo, it offers the structure and depth that have made Barolo one of Italy’s most revered red wines, while remaining approachable in its youth. This cuvée stands out for its focus on a single village and its meticulous selection of fruit from some of the area’s best growers, giving a clear, authentic expression of Barolo’s heartland.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Essenze shows a luminous garnet core with brick-tinged edges, a hallmark of traditional Nebbiolo. The nose is refined and layered, with aromas of dried rose petals, violet, sour cherry and redcurrant, supported by notes of sweet spice, licorice, tobacco, cedar and a hint of truffle and underbrush as it opens. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a firm but well-integrated tannic backbone, typical of Barolo from the village of Barolo. Flavors of tart cherry, raspberry and pomegranate are interwoven with leather, tea leaves, anise and subtle balsamic tones. The 2017 vintage brings a touch of warmth and generosity to the fruit, without sacrificing freshness. The finish is long, savory and mineral-driven, with fine-grained tannins and bright acidity suggesting a solid aging potential of 8–15 years from vintage, depending on your preference for primary fruit versus tertiary, evolved complexity.

Production
Grapes for Vite Colte Barolo del Comune di Barolo Essenze 2017 are sourced exclusively from carefully selected vineyards within the Barolo commune, an area known for its calcareous marl and clay-limestone soils that give Nebbiolo both aromatic finesse and structural grip. The vineyards lie on rolling hills with varied exposures, which helps achieve balanced ripening even in a warm year like 2017. Fruit is typically hand-harvested to allow strict selection of bunches in the vineyard. In the cellar, the must undergoes a traditional fermentation with extended maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin and aroma. The wine is then aged in a combination of large oak casks and/or barrels (often Slavonian and French oak) for several years, followed by bottle refinement, to allow the powerful Nebbiolo tannins to soften and the bouquet to gain complexity before release.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes and classic Piedmontese cuisine. Think braised beef or veal (brasato al Barolo), game meats, lamb shank, mushroom risotto, truffle-infused dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. It also works beautifully with roasted root vegetables and herb-crusted roasts. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo glasses to allow full aromatic development. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially in its youth, to let the wine open up and soften its tannins.

Producer
Vite Colte is a quality-focused cooperative based in Piemonte, bringing together a group of dedicated grower-members under a shared philosophy of meticulous vineyard work and careful, modern winemaking. Rooted in the Langhe hills, the cooperative has played an important role in making high-level Barolo and other Piedmont wines more accessible, while maintaining a strong link to traditional practices. Vite Colte emphasizes low yields, sustainable viticulture and rigorous fruit selection, resulting in wines that consistently overdeliver in terms of typicity and value. Their Barolo bottlings, including the village-specific Essenze range, have garnered recognition from international critics and consumers alike for their authenticity, reliability and clear sense of place.
