Description

Vinoquel-Vinhos Vintage 2019 is a classically styled Vintage Port from Quevedo, crafted from top parcels in the heart of Portugal’s Douro Valley. Bottled from a single outstanding year, it captures the depth, intensity and structure that make great Vintage Port so ageworthy. A blend of traditional Douro grapes, it offers both immediate pleasure and serious cellar potential. This 2019 release stands out for its purity of fruit and balance between power and freshness, a hallmark of Quevedo’s meticulous vineyard work. The wine continues the family’s journey from long-time grape suppliers to famed Port houses such as Taylor, to an acclaimed estate bottling under their own name—showcasing the true character of their prized vineyards.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Vinoquel-Vinhos Vintage 2019 shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple core with a vivid rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose opens with layers of blackberries, ripe plums and cassis, supported by notes of dark cherry, violets and wild herbs. With air, subtler tones of cocoa, licorice, black pepper and a touch of graphite emerge, reflecting the Douro’s schistous soils. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and richly textured, yet finely structured. Dense black and blue fruits are framed by firm but ripe tannins and a vibrant backbone of acidity, keeping the sweetness lifted and the finish long and precise. Sousão brings colour and freshness, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca contribute floral perfume and depth, while Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cão add spice and backbone. The finish is lingering, with dark chocolate, blackberry compote and a hint of dried fig. Built for the long haul, this 2019 Vintage Port will reward patience over 20–30+ years, gradually gaining complexity, softness and those classic mature Port notes of dried fruit, nuts and tobacco.

Production
Grown on steep, terraced vineyards in the Douro Valley around São João da Pesqueira, the grapes for this Vintage Port come from schist-based soils that naturally restrict yields and concentrate flavour. The warm, dry continental climate of the Douro, tempered by altitude and night-time cooling, allows the Sousão, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca to ripen fully while retaining acidity. Harvest is done by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection of bunches. In the winery, the grapes are traditionally crushed (often in lagares) and fermented on skins to extract colour, tannin and aroma, before the fermentation is stopped by the addition of grape spirit (aguardente) to preserve natural sweetness. The young Port is then aged in large vats or casks to retain fruit intensity, before being bottled as a declared Vintage Port for long-term bottle maturation.

Food & Serving
Vinoquel-Vinhos Vintage 2019 is an excellent companion to intense, flavourful cheeses such as Stilton, Roquefort or aged Portuguese cheeses, as well as dark chocolate desserts, chocolate fondant, flourless chocolate cake or desserts featuring black cherries and berries. It also pairs beautifully with roasted nuts, dried fruits and a fine cigar to close an evening. Serve slightly cool, ideally at 16–18°C (60–64°F), to keep the structure and aromatics in balance. For a young Vintage Port like this 2019, decanting is strongly recommended—at least 2–4 hours in advance—to allow the wine to open up and soften, with longer decanting (up to half a day) bringing even greater aromatic complexity.

Producer
Quevedo is a family-owned estate rooted in the small town of São João da Pesqueira, at the heart of the Douro Valley. For generations, the family cultivated vineyards and sold their high-quality grapes to major Port shippers—most notably Taylor—an early testament to the quality of their fruit. A turning point came in 1975, when Oscar Quevedo Sr. was compelled to vinify his own grapes, sparking a passion that led the family to move fully into wine production. In 1983 they acquired Quinta Vale d’Agodinho, now their flagship vineyard, dramatically situated between Quinta da Vargellas and the historic Cachão da Valeira. From 1991, Quevedo began bottling under their own name, investing in a modern winery and expanded cellars as their holdings grew to over 100 hectares. Today, with oenologist Cláudia Quevedo overseeing winemaking and her brother Oscar Jr. leading the estate’s international presence, Quevedo has become one of the Douro’s most respected contemporary producers, known for combining tradition with a fresh, transparent expression of both table wines and Ports.
