Description

Vieira de Sousa Douro Red Grand Reserve 2018 is a refined, cellar‑worthy red from one of the Douro Valley’s most characterful family producers. Sourced from prime high‑altitude vineyards, this Grand Reserve represents the estate’s top selection in an excellent vintage. It captures the power and structure the Douro is known for, while maintaining an impressive elegance and freshness.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Grand Reserve shows a deep, almost opaque ruby color with a youthful purple rim, hinting at both concentration and longevity. The nose is layered and expressive, with black cherry, ripe plum and wild berries wrapped in notes of violets, dried herbs and spice. Subtle touches of graphite, cedar and cocoa emerge as it opens, reflecting time in quality oak. On the palate, this is full‑bodied and structured, yet beautifully balanced. Dense dark fruit is lifted by bright acidity and framed by fine, ripe tannins that give the wine a firmly built, but polished, mouthfeel. Flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry are interwoven with hints of licorice, baking spice and a savory, mineral edge typical of the Douro’s schist soils. The finish is long, dry and persistent, suggesting excellent aging potential. Enjoy now with a decant, or cellar for 8–12+ years to allow the tannins to soften further and the tertiary notes of leather, tobacco and dried fruit to develop.

Production
This Grand Reserve is crafted from traditional Douro red varieties grown on steep, terraced vineyards along the Douro River, rooted in poor, schistous soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The region’s hot, dry summers and cooler nights help the grapes reach full ripeness while retaining freshness and aromatic complexity. Grapes are carefully hand‑harvested at optimal maturity, with strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only the best fruit is used. Vinification follows a classic Douro approach, with gentle fermentation to extract color, aroma and fine tannin, followed by extended aging in quality oak barrels to refine texture, add complexity and prepare the wine for long aging in bottle.

Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for rich, flavorful dishes such as grilled or roasted lamb, beef ribeye, game (venison, wild boar), and slow‑cooked stews. It also pairs beautifully with hearty Portuguese cuisine, such as roasted kid, posta mirandesa, or dishes with earthy mushrooms and aged cheeses like São Jorge or mature Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux‑style glasses to allow the aromas to unfold. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving, especially in its youth, to soften the tannins and fully reveal the wine’s depth and complexity.

Producer
Vieira de Sousa is a historic Douro family estate with roots in the region stretching back generations, long associated with both high‑quality Port and increasingly with characterful still wines. Drawing on deep knowledge of the valley’s vineyards and traditional grape varieties, the family has been part of the Douro’s evolution from a Port‑dominated region to one also celebrated for its distinctive dry reds. By combining traditional practices—such as careful hand‑harvesting on steep terraces—with modern precision in the cellar, Vieira de Sousa has built a reputation for wines that are authentic to their origin, structured yet refined, and consistently recognized for their strong sense of Douro identity.
