Description

Tormaresca Torcicoda Primitivo Salento 2023 is a rich, modern expression of Primitivo from the sun‑drenched Salento peninsula in Apulia, Italy. Crafted by Tormaresca, the Antinori family’s Puglian estate, it combines ripe southern Italian generosity with a refined, contemporary winemaking touch. Torcicoda has become a reference point for premium Primitivo, showcasing how this historic grape can deliver both power and polish.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Torcicoda shows a deep ruby color with vibrant purple reflections at the rim, hinting at its youth and concentration. The nose opens with intense aromas of ripe blackberries, dark cherries and plum compote, layered with notes of sweet spice, licorice, cocoa, vanilla and a touch of tobacco leaf, framed by hints of Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, this is a full‑bodied, velvety Primitivo, offering generous dark fruit—black cherry, blackberry and blueberry—balanced by a fresh acid backbone that keeps the wine lively. Fine, polished tannins give structure without harshness, while subtle oak brings notes of mocha, baking spice and a delicate smokiness. The finish is long and warming, with lingering flavors of ripe fruit and spice. Enjoyable now for its plush, primary fruit, the 2023 vintage has the substance to age gracefully for 5–8 years under proper cellar conditions, gaining complexity and more savory nuances over time.

Production
Torcicoda is sourced primarily from Tormaresca’s vineyards in Salento, where Primitivo thrives in warm, dry conditions moderated by constant breezes from the Adriatic and Ionian seas. The vines grow on a mix of calcareous and clay-limestone soils, which help retain freshness and concentration in the grapes despite the region’s intense sun. Grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness—often by hand in selected parcels—to preserve both richness and balance. After careful sorting, the must undergoes temperature‑controlled fermentation with extended maceration on the skins to extract color, aroma and supple tannins. The wine is then aged in oak (typically French and/or Hungarian barriques) to round the structure and add complexity, followed by bottle aging before release, resulting in a Primitivo that is both expressive and elegantly composed.

Food & Serving
Tormaresca Torcicoda Primitivo Salento 2023 is a versatile partner for hearty, flavor‑packed dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats, lamb chops, slow‑cooked beef ragù, game dishes, and richly sauced pastas. It also works well alongside aged cheeses, charcuterie, and wood‑fired pizzas topped with spicy salami or sausage. Serve at 16–18°C (61–64°F) in large red wine glasses. Decanting for 30–60 minutes before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the aromas to fully open and the tannins to soften.

Producer
Tormaresca is the Puglian outpost of the historic Marchesi Antinori family, one of Italy’s most influential wine dynasties, whose winemaking roots stretch back over six centuries. Established in Apulia to tap the region’s vast potential, Tormaresca farms two key estates—Bocca di Lupo in Castel del Monte and Masseria Maìme in Salento—combining native varieties with modern viticulture. The winery has played a major role in elevating Apulia’s reputation from bulk wine production to a source of distinctive, premium wines. With a strong focus on sustainable practices and quality-driven vineyard work, Tormaresca has earned international recognition for wines like Torcicoda, which highlight the character and richness of southern Italy in a polished, contemporary style.
