Description
Tiefenbrunner Gewürztraminer Merus 2022 is an expressive white wine from the cool, alpine slopes of Alto Adige, Italy’s northernmost wine region. Crafted from the aromatic Gewürztraminer grape, it offers an enticing mix of floral opulence and precise mountain freshness. As part of Tiefenbrunner’s Merus line, it represents a benchmark style for the variety in Südtirol, balancing richness with a clean, dry finish. This wine stands out for its vibrant aromatics, clarity of fruit, and the elegance that comes from high-altitude vineyards. Its distinctive character reflects both the unique terroir and Tiefenbrunner’s long-standing expertise with aromatic white grapes. The estate’s history in Alto Adige stretches back generations, and its wines have helped define the modern reputation of the region as one of Europe’s premier sources of refined, ageworthy whites.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Gewürztraminer Merus shows a bright, medium-golden hue with delicate green reflections, hinting at both aromatic intensity and freshness. The nose is immediately inviting, with classic Gewürztraminer notes of rose petals and lychee, layered with exotic spices, ripe peach, candied citrus peel, and a subtle hint of ginger and honey. There is a lifted, alpine edge to the aromatics that keeps the wine feeling pure and vibrant rather than heavy.
On the palate, the wine is medium- to full-bodied, with a silky texture and a generous, aromatic flavor profile. Juicy lychee, white peach, and mandarin mingle with notes of rosewater, clove, and a gentle, refreshing bitterness reminiscent of grapefruit zest. The acidity is well-integrated, bringing a cool, mineral-driven line that balances the grape’s natural opulence and leads to a long, spicy, and finely dry finish. Enjoyable now for its youthful exuberance, it has the structure to evolve over the next 3–5 years, gaining more honeyed and spicy complexity while maintaining its backbone of freshness.
Production
The Gewürztraminer Merus 2022 is sourced from selected vineyards in Alto Adige, where steep, well-exposed slopes and significant diurnal temperature variation help preserve aromatics and acidity. The soils are typically a mix of limestone, gravel, and morainic deposits, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the wine’s mineral tension and precision. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to capture both aromatic intensity and balance, with careful selection in the vineyard to ensure only healthy, fully mature clusters are brought to the cellar. In the winery, the fruit is gently pressed, and the must is clarified before a cool, temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel, a method that preserves the varietal purity and freshness of Gewürztraminer. The wine is then aged on fine lees for a period to enhance texture and aromatic complexity, before being bottled to retain its bright, youthful character.
Food & Serving
This Gewürztraminer is a versatile food partner, particularly well-suited to aromatic and mildly spicy cuisines. It pairs beautifully with Thai or Vietnamese dishes, lightly spiced curries, and dishes featuring ginger, lemongrass, or coconut milk. It also complements rich pâtés, foie gras, aromatic soft cheeses (such as Munster or washed-rind cheeses), and dishes with roasted root vegetables or pumpkin. For a classic alpine match, try it with cured meats, smoked trout, or flavorful mountain cheeses. Serve well-chilled but not ice cold, ideally at 8–10°C (46–50°F), to allow the aromatics to open gradually. Decanting is not necessary, but pouring the wine into glasses a few minutes before serving will help the bouquet fully express itself.
Producer
Tiefenbrunner is one of Alto Adige’s most respected family estates, rooted in the historic Castel Turmhof, whose distinctive tower has become a symbol of the winery. Located in the mountainous region known as Südtirol by the local German-speaking population, the estate has cultivated vines for generations, helping to shape the area’s reputation for world-class white wines. Under the guidance of Christof Tiefenbrunner, with his wife Sabine overseeing the office and hospitality side, the winery has consistently produced wines that marry regional character with modern precision. Tiefenbrunner’s commitment to quality, meticulous vineyard work, and a sensitive approach in the cellar have earned the estate numerous awards and international recognition, placing it among the leading producers of premium wines in northern Italy.
