Description
Thomas Niedermayr Hof Gandberg Bronner Bio 2016 is a characterful, single-varietal white from Trentino-Südtirol that shows just how exciting the PIWI grape Bronner can be. Certified organic and grown in two dramatically different vineyard sites, it unites Alpine clarity with real depth and charm. Described by Niedermayr himself as both a “racy type” and an “elegant charmer,” this wine offers a distinctive, mineral-driven expression of northern Italy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Bronner presents a bright, straw-yellow hue with subtle green reflections, hinting at both freshness and concentration. The nose is complex and inviting, with aromas of fresh hay, jasmine and chamomile blossoms leading the way. Beneath the floral tones, you’ll find gentle notes of dried herbs and a stony, cool minerality that speaks clearly of its mountain terroir.
On the palate, the wine is taut yet silky, with a fine balance between racy acidity and a creamy texture developed through extended lees aging. Flavours recall herbal tea, bergamot, nutmeg and a touch of beeswax, all wrapped in a precise, mineral frame. The finish is long, salty and pleasantly spicy, leaving a clean, savoury aftertaste that invites another sip. Thanks to its structure, acidity and mineral backbone, this 2016 vintage has excellent aging potential, evolving over several more years towards greater waxy, nutty and honeyed complexity while retaining its Alpine freshness.
Production
This Bronner is sourced from two contrasting sites in Trentino-Südtirol: the deep, clay-rich Eislöcher soils on the Eppan Berg, rich in limestone and white dolomitic rock, and the lean, sandy soils of the “Algund” vineyard at the foot of the Texelgruppe, marked by gneiss and slate. The combination creates what Niedermayr calls a “mineral synthesis,” lending both power and precision to the wine. Farmed organically with a focus on biodiversity and minimal intervention, the grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve their natural acidity and aromatic complexity. In the cellar, a gentle pressing and spontaneous fermentation are followed by an extended maturation on fine lees, which builds texture, creaminess and subtle autolytic notes without masking the grape’s purity. The result is a naturally expressive, unforced wine that captures both site and variety.
Food & Serving
This Bronner Bio 2016 is a versatile partner at the table, particularly suited to refined, subtly aromatic dishes. It pairs beautifully with Alpine specialties such as herb-crusted trout, veal schnitzel with lemon, or soft cow’s milk cheeses, as well as Mediterranean fare like grilled sea bass, risotto with garden herbs, or vegetable-based starters featuring fennel, artichoke or asparagus. The wine’s herbal and floral nuances also work well with lightly spiced poultry and dishes scented with citrus or delicate Asian spices. Serve at 10–12°C to highlight its freshness and aromatics. A short decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply allowing the wine to open in the glass, helps the more complex beeswax, spice and mineral notes unfold.
