Description
Terre Nere Etna Rosso Prephylloxera La Vigna di Don Peppino Calderara Sottana 2023 is one of the most remarkable expressions of Etna, drawn from century-old, un-grafted vines that have survived phylloxera and still thrive on the volcano’s northern slopes. Produced by Tenuta delle Terre Nere, this rare wine captures the elegance, mineral tension and historic soul that have made Etna one of Italy’s most exciting fine-wine regions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the graceful transparency typical of great Nerello Mascalese, with a vivid ruby color and a refined, luminous edge. The bouquet is complex and lifted, weaving together wild red berries, sour cherry, dried herbs, rose petals, spice and a distinctive volcanic minerality.
On the palate, it is precise and layered, with bright acidity, fine-grained tannins and a long, savory finish that reflects both altitude and volcanic soil. The small addition of Nerello Cappuccio adds a touch of suppleness and aromatic depth. This is a wine with excellent aging potential, likely to develop even more nuance, earthiness and silky texture over the coming years.
Production
The wine comes from two small parcels in Calderara, in the commune of Randazzo on Etna’s north side, at around 650 meters above sea level. The vines are exceptionally old, pre-phylloxera and un-grafted, rooted in volcanic soils that, combined with strong day-to-night temperature swings, create ideal conditions for producing highly expressive, site-driven wines.
Harvest is carried out late, usually in the first part of October, to ensure full phenolic ripeness. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by 15 to 18 months of maturation in French oak barrels and a final month in steel before bottling.
Food & Serving
This Etna Rosso pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, grilled game, mushroom risotto, braised beef, aged pecorino and rich Mediterranean dishes with herbs and tomato. Serve it at 16-18°C, and consider decanting for 30-60 minutes if drinking young to allow the aromatics and structure to fully open.
Producer
Tenuta delle Terre Nere is widely regarded as one of the benchmark producers on Etna, helping to define the modern identity of the region through terroir-focused wines of precision and finesse. Founded by Marco de Grazia, the estate has gained international recognition for its single-vineyard bottlings and its commitment to highlighting the volcanic microclimates of Etna. Its wines have earned consistent praise from critics and major wine guides, cementing the producer’s reputation as a leader in Sicilian fine wine.
