Tenuta delle Terre Nere’s Etna Rosso Moganazzi Vecchie Vigne 2023 is a striking expression of old-vine Nerello Mascalese from one of Etna’s most admired crus. It combines volcanic tension, finesse, and depth in a way that has made Terre Nere a benchmark producer on the mountain.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a bright, translucent ruby hue that hints at its elegance rather than weight. The nose is lifted and precise, with red cherry, wild strawberry, dried herbs, rose petals, volcanic ash, and a subtle smoky, iron-like edge.
On the palate, it is refined and energetic, with juicy red berry fruit, fine-grained tannins, and a vivid line of acidity that keeps the wine beautifully focused. The old vines add concentration and nuance, while the volcanic soils contribute a savory, mineral finish. While already appealing in youth, this is a wine that can develop beautifully over several years, gaining complexity and silkiness with time.
Production
Moganazzi is one of the prized cru sites on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, where the combination of altitude, volcanic soils, and cool mountain breezes creates a distinctly fresh and mineral style. The old vines bring naturally low yields and remarkable concentration, and the vineyard’s terroir plays a major role in the wine’s precision and depth.
Harvesting is carried out by hand, with careful selection to preserve the quality of the fruit. Vinification is typically geared toward highlighting purity and site expression, with gentle extraction and thoughtful maturation that allow Nerello Mascalese to show its aromatic lift, structure, and volcanic character.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast poultry, grilled lamb, mushroom risotto, veal, game birds, and Mediterranean dishes with herbs and earthy notes. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if opening it young to help the wine open up and soften its structure.
Producer
Tenuta delle Terre Nere, founded by Marco de Grazia, has become one of the defining names in modern Etna winemaking. The estate helped elevate the reputation of Mount Etna as a world-class wine region, focusing on single-vineyard expressions that showcase the mountain’s varied terroirs. Its wines are widely respected for their elegance, purity, and ability to reflect site with exceptional clarity.
