Description
Tenuta di Sesta Brunello di Montalcino Duelecci Ovest Riserva 2013 is a powerful, classically styled single-vineyard Brunello from the southern hills of Montalcino. Crafted exclusively from Sangiovese Grosso and aged as a true Riserva, it captures the elegance, depth and structure that have made this estate a reference point in the region. Highly awarded and still youthful, this 2013 is a superb choice for collectors and serious Brunello lovers alike. Recognized with the prestigious 3 Glasses (Tre Bicchieri) in Gambero Rosso 2019 and named Red Wine of the Year for the 2012 vintage, Duelecci Ovest has firmly established itself among Tuscany’s top wines. The 2013 combines fragrant forest fruit, floral and leather nuances with polished tannins and vibrant acidity, promising a long and graceful evolution in the cellar. It stands out for its single-vineyard expression, traditional long aging in large oak casks, and a style that embodies the historic soul of Brunello di Montalcino.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2013 Duelecci Ovest Riserva shows a deep garnet core with brick-red highlights at the rim, reflecting both its age and traditional upbringing. The color remains vibrant and clear, with a beautiful viscosity that hints at its concentration.
The nose is refined and complex, opening with fresh wild berries—think raspberry, wild strawberry and redcurrant—layered with dried flowers, rose petals and a touch of violet. With air, darker notes emerge: leather, tobacco leaf, subtle underbrush, and a gentle spice from the oak that is present but well integrated. There’s an engaging mix of freshness and maturity, where forest fruits, blossoms and savory tertiary notes all play their part.
On the palate, the wine offers a silky, almost caressing entry before the structure builds across the mid-palate. The tannins are fine-grained and well-knit, in perfect harmony with a lively, mouth-watering acidity that keeps the wine focused and energetic. Flavors mirror the nose: red and black forest fruits, a hint of cherry liqueur, dried herbs, leather and a touch of sweet spice. The finish is long, fruit-driven and gently savory, with the wood still just perceptible but already well on its way to full integration.
Although already very enjoyable, this 2013 clearly has further potential to evolve. Over the coming years, the tannins will continue to soften and the aromatic profile will gain even more nuance, with truffle, dried fruit and balsamic notes likely to develop. Properly stored, this Riserva has the capacity to age gracefully for well over a decade from now.
Production
Tenuta di Sesta’s Duelecci Ovest comes from a west-facing single vineyard in the southern part of Montalcino, between Sant’Angelo in Colle and Castelnuovo dell’Abate, an area known for its warm, dry climate and well-drained galestro and marl soils. This terroir delivers grapes with excellent ripeness, intensity and aromatic purity, tempered by cool evening breezes that preserve freshness. Sangiovese Grosso is harvested by hand, with careful selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly mature, healthy bunches are used. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, with a traditional maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin and complexity without sacrificing finesse. The Riserva then matures for an extended period—traditionally around three years—in large Slavonian oak casks, followed by additional bottle aging before release. This long, patient élevage allows the wine’s structure to soften, the aromas to gain complexity and the single-vineyard character to fully express itself.
Food & Serving
The 2013 Duelecci Ovest Riserva is a superb partner for rich, savory dishes that echo its depth and structure. Think classic Tuscan fare such as bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb shanks, wild boar ragù over pappardelle, or roasted game birds. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino Toscano and mature Comté, as well as earthy mushroom dishes and truffle-based plates. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Given its structure and age, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open fully and to soften the remaining youthful edges, especially if enjoyed in the next few years.
Producer
Tenuta di Sesta is a historic family estate located in the southern reaches of Montalcino, not far from the ancient Abbey of Sant’Antimo, an area long prized for producing some of the appellation’s most characterful Brunellos. The estate has been cultivating vines for generations and was among the early adopters when Brunello di Montalcino began to gain international recognition in the 20th century. Over time, Tenuta di Sesta has earned a reputation for crafting classically styled, terroir-driven Brunello, with a focus on traditional aging in large oak casks and meticulous vineyard work. The Duelecci cru, and in particular Duelecci Ovest, stands as one of the flagship expressions of the property, regularly receiving top accolades—such as Tre Bicchieri and prestigious scores in publications like Vinum’s “Top of Toskana”—and reinforcing Tenuta di Sesta’s status as one of the key names in the Montalcino landscape.
