Description
Tenuta di Fessina Etna Bianco Superiore “Il Musmeci” 2023 is a refined expression of Carricante from the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna. This is a white wine with real character: mineral-driven, precise and deeply elegant, crafted from old vines rooted in black lava soils. Named in homage to the Musmeci family who once owned the estate, it captures both the history and raw energy of Etna in the glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Il Musmeci 2023 shows a pale, luminous straw-yellow color with greenish highlights, suggesting freshness and tension. The nose opens slowly and finely: lemon zest, bergamot and green apple intertwine with wild herbs, anise, and delicate white flowers, all wrapped in a distinctive smoky, salty, almost flinty volcanic minerality.
On the palate it is taut, vertical and saline, with a vibrant spine of acidity that is classic for high-altitude Carricante. Citrus and crunchy orchard fruit are layered with notes of bitter almond, fennel, and wet stone, leading to a long, mouthwatering, slightly savory finish. Despite its youthful energy, the structure and acidity indicate excellent aging potential: expect this 2023 to develop more texture, complexity and subtle honeyed and nutty tones over 8–12 years, and potentially longer in optimal conditions.
Production
Il Musmeci Etna Bianco Superiore is sourced from high-altitude Carricante vineyards on Etna’s eastern slopes, where old vines dig deep into porous, decomposed lava and ash. This cool, ventilated terroir — with dramatic day-night temperature swings — preserves acidity and aromatic finesse while chiseled, mineral nuances come straight from the volcanic soils. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of perfectly ripe but fresh fruit, often in small crates to protect the berries. After a gentle pressing, fermentation usually takes place in temperature-controlled tanks (and in some vintages partly in large neutral wood) to retain purity and tension, followed by maturation on fine lees to build texture, complexity and longevity without masking the wine’s distinctive Etna clarity.
Food & Serving
Il Musmeci 2023 is a superb match for refined seafood and Mediterranean dishes: think crudo, oysters, grilled prawns, octopus, simply prepared white fish, or seared scallops with citrus and herbs. It also pairs beautifully with Sicilian dishes such as pasta alle vongole, lightly spiced fish couscous, vegetable tempura, and fresh goat or sheep’s cheeses. Serve chilled but not icy, ideally around 10–12°C, to allow the aromatics and minerality to unfold. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes, especially in its youth, can help the wine open up and reveal its full range of volcanic and citrus nuances.
Producer
Founded in 2007 by Silvia Maestrelli, Tenuta di Fessina has quickly become one of the reference estates on Mount Etna and a key name in the renaissance of Sicilian wine. Based in the Contrada Rovitello area on the northern side of the volcano, the winery focuses on old-vine, high-altitude vineyards planted on historic lava terraces, working primarily with native varieties such as Nerello Mascalese and Carricante. Through sensitive, site-focused viticulture and restrained, elegant winemaking, Tenuta di Fessina has helped redefine Etna as one of Italy’s most exciting fine-wine regions, with Il Musmeci standing as one of the estate’s flagship bottlings and a benchmark for Etna Bianco Superiore.
