Description
Steininger Zweigelt 2018 is a graceful Austrian red that showcases the lighter, fragrant side of the country’s flagship red grape. Crafted in the rolling hills above the wine village of Langenlois in Kamptal, it balances vibrant fruit with subtle spice and remarkable drinkability. This is a beautifully approachable red that still carries the precision and polish for which Weingut Steininger is renowned.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Zweigelt shows a clear, bright ruby hue with violet reflections at the rim. The nose is charming and expressive, offering aromas of ripe sour cherry, red currant and juicy plum, layered with hints of violets, cracked pepper, fine herbal notes and a touch of sweet spice.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied and supple, with silky tannins and a refreshing, food-friendly acidity. Flavours of red cherry, raspberry and wild berries are supported by a subtle spicy backbone and a gentle hint of cocoa or soft oak, if used, adding depth without heaviness. The finish is clean, elegant and slightly mineral, making it as easy to enjoy on its own as it is at the table. Best enjoyed in its youth to capture its vivid fruit and freshness, it should drink beautifully over the next 3–6 years from vintage, gaining a little more softness and savoury complexity with short-term cellaring.
Production
The grapes for Steininger Zweigelt are sourced from vineyards rising behind the village of Langenlois in Kamptal, where cooler evenings and well-drained, elevated sites help preserve freshness and aromatic intensity. Soils here are typically a mix of loess, gravel and primary rock, lending both fruit purity and a subtle mineral edge to the wines. The fruit is carefully harvested, often by hand, to ensure healthy, optimally ripe bunches make it to the cellar. After gentle crushing, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks to capture bright fruit character, followed by maturation in stainless steel and/or large, neutral Austrian oak, keeping oak influence discreet and preserving Zweigelt’s naturally juicy, elegant profile.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile, all‑round table red that pairs beautifully with a range of dishes: think roast chicken, herb-crusted pork, grilled sausages, charcuterie, mushroom pastas, and lighter beef or veal dishes. It also works well with Austrian-inspired comfort food such as schnitzel, roasted root vegetables, and mild alpine cheeses. Serve slightly cool at about 14–16 °C to highlight its freshness and aromatic lift. A brief 20–30 minute decant can help the wine open up its red-fruited and floral notes, but it is equally enjoyable poured straight from the bottle.
Producer
Weingut Steininger is a respected family estate based in the picturesque wine village of Langenlois in Kamptal, one of Austria’s leading wine regions. Led by Karl and Brigitte Steininger and now involving their daughter Eva on the commercial side, the winery has built a strong reputation for impeccable Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and traditionally made Sekt produced from a range of grape varieties. Their vineyards climb the hills behind Langenlois, where cooler, higher-altitude sites deliver precision and lively acidity. Together with a neighbouring estate, the family helped create the innovative Loisium wine experience and hotel, complete with underground cellar passages that showcase the stages of winemaking, further cementing their role as ambassadors for Kamptal and Austrian wine on the international stage.
