Description
Steininger Riesling Beerenauslese is a luxurious, late-harvest sweet wine from the rolling hills of Kamptal in Austria, presented in an elegant 37.5 cl half-bottle. Crafted from carefully selected Riesling berries affected by noble rot, it delivers an intense concentration of flavor balanced by vibrant acidity. This non-vintage cuvée showcases Steininger’s mastery of both Riesling and late-harvest styles, making it a standout dessert wine for memorable occasions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Beerenauslese typically shows a bright golden to deep straw hue, with a glossy, almost viscous appearance that hints at its richness. The nose is opulent and pure, unfolding layers of ripe apricot, peach compote and candied citrus peel, joined by notes of acacia honey, dried pineapple and hints of jasmine and wet slate.
On the palate, it is lusciously sweet yet beautifully lifted by Riesling’s hallmark acidity, creating a precise and lively tension. Expect flavors of apricot jam, quince, baked apple and honey, with subtle tropical nuances and a gentle spice note on the finish. The texture is silky and mouthcoating, but never cloying, thanks to the cool Kamptal freshness. Stored well, this style of Riesling Beerenauslese has excellent aging potential, easily maturing and gaining complexity over 10–20 years or more, developing deeper honey, caramelized and marmalade-like tones over time.
Production
The grapes for Steininger Riesling Beerenauslese come from steep, well-exposed vineyards around Langenlois in Kamptal, where the interplay of cool nights and warm days helps Riesling retain its racy acidity while achieving full ripeness. The soils are typically a mix of loess, primary rock and gravel, which contribute both minerality and finesse. For Beerenauslese, only individually selected, overripe berries—often touched by Botrytis cinerea (noble rot)—are harvested by hand in multiple passes through the vineyard to ensure optimal selection. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and slowly fermented at controlled temperatures to preserve aromatic purity, with fermentation stopped to retain natural grape sugar. The wine is then matured in stainless steel or neutral vessels to highlight fruit, terroir and freshness rather than oak influence, before being blended as a meticulous non-vintage cuvée for consistent house style.
Food & Serving
This Riesling Beerenauslese is a natural partner for classic desserts such as crème brûlée, fruit tarts, lemon or apricot cakes, and panna cotta, as well as blue cheeses like Roquefort or Stilton, where its sweetness and acidity cut through the salt and richness. It also pairs beautifully with foie gras or paté as a luxurious starter. Serve lightly chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to showcase both freshness and complexity. Decanting is generally not necessary, but opening the bottle 10–15 minutes before serving allows the aromas to fully open in the glass.
Producer
Weingut Steininger is a family-run estate based in the picturesque wine town of Langenlois in Kamptal, one of Austria’s premier white wine regions. Led by Karl and Brigitte Steininger, with daughter Eva increasingly at the helm on the commercial side, the winery has earned a strong reputation for its precision-crafted Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and traditional-method Sekt. Their vineyards rise in tiers behind the town, climbing into higher, cooler elevations that are ideal for aromatic, structured whites and expressive late-harvest wines. Beyond winemaking, the family co-created the acclaimed Loisium wine complex and museum, a modern architectural landmark that celebrates Kamptal’s wine culture. Steininger is widely recognized for combining traditional craftsmanship with innovation, and for helping to elevate Austria’s standing in the world of premium white and sparkling wines.
