Description
Serafini e Vidotto Rosso dell'Abazia Magnum 2018 is a refined Bordeaux-style blend from the hills of Veneto, crafted by one of Italy’s most respected modern estates. Bottled in magnum, this vintage offers greater aging potential and a more harmoniously evolving wine, ideal for collectors and special occasions. Combining Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, it showcases the depth and elegance that have made Rosso dell’Abazia a benchmark Italian red since the late 1980s.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Rosso dell'Abazia shows a deep, concentrated ruby color with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at both intensity and structure. The nose is complex and layered, opening with blackcurrant, ripe plum, and wild berries, followed by notes of tobacco leaf, cedar, graphite, and subtle green pepper from the Cabernets. With air, additional nuances of dried herbs, dark chocolate, and sweet spices emerge.
On the palate, this is a structured yet polished wine, with ripe, well-integrated tannins and a vibrant line of acidity that carries the fruit. Flavors of black cherry, cassis, and blackberry are interwoven with savory tones of licorice, roasted coffee, and earthy mineral notes from the Montello terroir. The finish is long, persistent, and finely balanced between fruit, spice, and freshness. In magnum, the 2018 has excellent aging potential: it is enjoyable now with a good decant, but will continue to develop added complexity and tertiary notes over the next 10–15 years or more.
Production
Rosso dell'Abazia comes from hillside vineyards in the Montello area of Veneto, where iron-rich, well-drained soils and a mild, ventilated climate are particularly well-suited to Bordeaux varieties. Yields are kept deliberately low to concentrate flavor and structure, and harvest is done by hand, with careful selection of the healthiest, ripest bunches. In the cellar, the grapes are vinified separately with temperature-controlled fermentations and extended maceration to extract color, aroma, and fine tannins. The wine is then matured in French oak barriques—often a mix of new and used—for an extended period, allowing the blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot to integrate, gain texture, and develop its signature complexity before being bottled, with the magnum format further promoting slow, graceful evolution.
Food & Serving
This magnum of Rosso dell'Abazia is a natural companion to rich, savory dishes such as roasted or grilled red meats, braised beef, lamb shoulder, venison, and game stews. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses, truffle dishes, and hearty pasta or risotto with meat ragù or wild mushrooms. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting is recommended—at least 1–2 hours for current drinking—to allow the wine to fully open and soften, especially given its youth and structure in the 2018 vintage.
Producer
Serafini e Vidotto, founded in 1986 by Francesco Serafini and Antonello Vidotto, is widely regarded as a pioneering estate in Veneto for high-quality, Bordeaux-inspired red wines. Based in the Montello-Colli Asolani area, the winery helped redefine the region’s reputation, proving that serious, age-worthy reds could stand alongside the best from more famous Italian appellations. The estate has long championed sustainable viticulture, meticulous vineyard work, and a focused, low-intervention approach in the cellar. Rosso dell’Abazia is their flagship wine and has earned consistent acclaim from Italian and international critics alike, establishing Serafini e Vidotto as a reference point for elegant, structured red wines from northeastern Italy.
