Description

Seña Vineyard Seña 2017 is a benchmark Chilean red blend that marries Bordeaux tradition with the distinct character of Aconcagua. Crafted primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère, with touches of Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it’s a poised, complex wine built for both immediate pleasure and long-term cellaring. Conceived as a joint venture between Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi in the 1990s, Seña has become one of Chile’s most acclaimed fine wines, consistently showcasing the country’s world‑class potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Seña 2017 shows a deep, luminous ruby-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with layers of ripe blackcurrant, blueberry and plum, intertwined with notes of graphite, pencil shavings, dried herbs and subtle floral tones. With air, aromas of cedar, tobacco leaf, cocoa, and a touch of sweet spice and smoke emerge, reflecting its refined oak maturation. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably precise and vibrant, with a core of dark fruit supported by fine-grained tannins and lively acidity. Flavors of cassis, black cherry and boysenberry are framed by hints of bay leaf, espresso, dark chocolate and crushed stone, leading to a long, savory, mineral finish. The structure and balance of the 2017 vintage suggest excellent aging potential; it is impressive now with decanting, but will continue to evolve gracefully for 12–20 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary notes over time.

Production
Seña is sourced from the estate’s biodynamically farmed vineyard in the Aconcagua Valley, where the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean and the Andean foothills create an extended, even growing season. The soils are predominantly decomposed granite and clay with stones and gravel, providing excellent drainage and naturally limiting yields, which enhances concentration and aromatic intensity. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested in small lots at optimal ripeness, then sorted berry by berry to ensure pristine quality. Fermentation typically takes place in stainless steel and concrete tanks, with gentle extraction to preserve elegance and freshness rather than brute power. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—mostly new—for around 18–22 months, allowing the varietal character and the Aconcagua terroir to shine through while gaining polish and textural finesse.

Food & Serving
Seña 2017 is a superb companion to richly flavored dishes such as grilled or roasted lamb, dry-aged ribeye, beef short ribs, and game birds like duck or pheasant. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle-infused risottos, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Manchego, or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and structural finesse. For optimal enjoyment now, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the wine to fully open; younger bottles in a cool cellar will benefit from even longer aeration, while well-aged bottles should be handled gently and decanted just before serving to remove sediment.

Producer
Seña was founded in 1995 as a visionary collaboration between Chilean vintner Eduardo Chadwick of Viña Errazuriz and Napa legend Robert Mondavi, with the goal of creating a Chilean wine to stand alongside the world’s greatest. The estate, located in the Aconcagua Valley, was established as a pioneering site for high-quality, Bordeaux-style blends that would express a uniquely Chilean sense of place. Over the years, Seña has been a driving force in elevating Chile’s international reputation, notably after landmark blind tastings in Berlin where it ranked alongside and above prestigious First Growths from Bordeaux. Today, Seña is regarded as one of Chile’s flagship fine wines, lauded by critics for its consistency, elegance and age-worthiness, and for its commitment to sustainable, biodynamic viticulture.
