Schola Sarmenti Nerio DOC Riserva 2021

Schola Sarmenti Nerio DOC Riserva 2021 is a compelling expression of Salento, combining the depth of Negroamaro with the aromatic finesse of Malvasia Nera. Drawn from old alberello-trained vines in Nardò, it captures the sun-baked character and coastal freshness that have made this corner of Puglia so admired for generations.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby color with subtle garnet reflections. The nose is generous and layered, offering ripe cherry, blackcurrant, plum and blackberry, followed by notes of spice, leather, tobacco and a hint of coffee. The palate is full-bodied and silky, with mature tannins, concentrated dark fruit and a long, spicy finish. Despite its warmth and richness, the wine keeps a pleasing freshness and balance, giving it both immediate appeal and the structure to evolve gracefully over the next few years.

Production
Nerio Riserva 2021 comes from around 50-year-old vines grown in the Nardò DOC in the heart of Salento, where hot Mediterranean days are tempered by maritime influence and limestone-rich soils. The grapes, 80% Negroamaro and 20% Malvasia Nera di Lecce, are harvested by hand and carefully selected before vinification. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 8 months in French tonneaux and a further 8 months in bottle, building depth and complexity while preserving the purity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for roasted lamb, grilled beef, wild boar ragù, rich pasta dishes and aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C to let the aromatics and texture show at their best, and decant for about 30–45 minutes if drinking young to soften the tannins and open the bouquet.
