Description
Satemo Old Kondoli Qvevri Wine 2020 is a characterful Georgian orange wine crafted from the ancient Rkatsiteli grape in the famed village of Kondoli in Kakheti. Made in traditional clay qvevri, this amber-hued wine bridges centuries-old winemaking with a clean, contemporary precision. It stands out for its extended skin contact, artisanal handling of whole clusters, and a style that captures both the rustic soul and refined elegance of Georgian wine culture.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Old Kondoli 2020 shines a vivid amber to deep copper, with a brightness that immediately signals its extended skin contact. The color is beautifully clear yet intense, hinting at both structure and complexity. On the nose, it is open and inviting: gentle caramel notes and a touch of vanilla weave together with honeyed nuances and fully ripe stone fruit. Aromas of stewed and dried apricots, a hint of compote, and subtle floral and tea-like undertones add layers that unfold with air.
On the palate, the wine is dry, textural, and structured, with the hallmark grip of an authentic qvevri-made amber wine. Flavors echo the nose—dried apricot, baked quince, and hints of orange zest—wrapped in a delicate frame of caramelized honey and spice. Fine yet firm tannins from the extended skin and stem contact give shape and length, balanced by a fresh, food-friendly acidity. This 2020 vintage drinks beautifully now but has the depth and tannic backbone to develop further complexity over the next 5–7 years, gaining more nutty, savory, and tea-like nuances with careful cellaring.
Production
The fruit for Satemo Old Kondoli Qvevri Wine 2020 comes from the historic village of Kondoli in Kakheti, one of Georgia’s most prized wine-growing regions, where warm days, cool nights and well-drained soils provide ideal conditions for Rkatsiteli. Whole bunches are carefully hand-selected in the vineyard, then gently crushed to preserve purity and avoid harsh extraction. The must—complete with skins, stems, and seeds—is fermented and macerated for six months in traditional clay qvevri of around 600 liters, buried in the earth to maintain a naturally cool, stable temperature. After this extended underground qvevri aging, the wine is transferred to stainless steel tanks, where it rests further to harmonize, clarify, and preserve its vibrant fruit and freshness without the influence of oak.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with richly flavored and textural dishes. Try it with Georgian classics such as khachapuri, badrijani (eggplant with walnut paste), and walnut- or herb-based pkhali, or serve it alongside roasted poultry, slow-cooked pork, grilled lamb, and earthy vegetable dishes featuring mushroom, pumpkin, or root vegetables. It also works very well with aged cheeses, washed-rind cheeses, and herb-laden Mediterranean cuisine. Serve at 12–14°C (around 54–57°F) to highlight its aromatic depth and structure. A short decant of 20–30 minutes helps the wine open up, allowing its dried fruit, honeyed, and spicy notes to fully express themselves.
