Description
Saint Hilaire Cuvée Prestige Rouge 2022 is a rich, characterful red from Côtes de Provence, crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. It combines the sun-drenched power of Provence with an elegant, polished structure, making it as comfortable on a weeknight table as it is at a special dinner. This cuvée stands out for its deep color, generous black fruit and finely judged oak, echoing the estate’s long family tradition of meticulous, terroir-driven winemaking.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a dark garnet hue with clear, bright edges and a few subtle, almost rare reflections that hint at its concentration. The nose is immediately expressive and complex: notes of blackberries and blackcurrants mingle with black pepper, toasted wood, and a gentle smoky, burnt-wood character. The oak is present but well integrated, wrapping the dark fruit in warm, spicy nuances.
On the palate, Cuvée Prestige Rouge 2022 is round, generous and beautifully spicy. A core of ripe black fruit—blackberry, plum and cassis—is lifted by pepper, clove and a touch of garrigue-like earthiness. The oak brings accents of toast and subtle coffee, supporting but never overwhelming the fruit. Tannins are firm yet polished, giving the wine a long, flavourful finish with a persistent, spicy grip that invites another sip. With its structure and concentration, this wine offers impressive aging potential of around ten years, during which it will gain further complexity and softness.
Production
Château Saint Hilaire lies in the heart of Provence, where sun-drenched days, cool nights and Mediterranean winds shape grapes with ripeness and freshness. The Côtes de Provence terroir—marked by limestone and clay soils and the influence of the Mistral—naturally limits yields and concentrates flavour. Grapes for Cuvée Prestige Rouge are harvested at optimal ripeness, then carefully sorted to keep only the best berries. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah is vinified in temperature-controlled conditions to preserve aromatics and extract fine tannins, followed by maturation with oak influence to build texture and add layers of spice, toast and complexity before bottling.
Food & Serving
Saint Hilaire Cuvée Prestige Rouge 2022 calls for simple, flavourful dishes that let the wine shine. It is superb with a classic beef tournedos and new potatoes sprinkled with coarse salt, slow-cooked pork stew or braised lamb with herbs. It also pairs well with grilled meats, game birds, hearty vegetable stews and aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C. For the best expression, decant for about 30 minutes before serving to allow the tannins to soften and the dark fruit and spicy, toasted notes to fully open.
Producer
The Lapierre family has been rooted in the village of Coudoux in Provence since the late 18th century, initially cultivating the land mainly with olive trees. In 1935, Jean Lapierre left his career as an officer in the French navy to dedicate himself entirely to the estate. His son Max took over in 1952, transforming the property into a true wine domaine and passing his know-how and passion for the craft to the next generation. In 1973, Yves Lapierre created Domaine Saint Hilaire with the ambition of producing great wines anchored in the originality of the local terroir. This vision culminated in 2011 with the construction of a modern winery at the heart of the vineyards, completed in 2016 and named Château Saint Hilaire. Today, with Yves and his sons Nicolas and Bruno at the helm, the estate is a respected reference in the Aix-en-Provence and Côtes de Provence area, known for combining family tradition with contemporary precision in the cellar.
