Description

Lungarotti Sagrantino Passito 2017 (0.375 L) is an elegant sweet wine that showcases the power and depth of Umbria’s native Sagrantino grape in its most opulent form. Crafted in a dessert wine style, this half-bottle is perfect for sharing at the end of a meal or for pairing with rich cheeses and chocolate. It unites Lungarotti’s pioneering spirit in Umbria with a traditional passito method that concentrates flavor, aroma, and texture in every sip.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Sagrantino Passito typically presents a deep garnet to almost opaque ruby color, with a viscous texture that clings to the sides. The nose is intense and complex, often showing notes of ripe blackberries, dried figs, plum compote, and black cherries, layered with hints of cocoa, sweet spices, licorice, and a subtle balsamic or herbal nuance. On the palate, you can expect a rich, velvety sweetness balanced by Sagrantino’s naturally firm tannic backbone and fresh acidity. Flavors mirror the nose with dried dark fruits, candied orange peel, chocolate, coffee, and warming spice, leading to a long, persistent finish. Thanks to the grape’s structure and the wine’s concentration, this 2017 vintage has excellent aging potential; properly cellared, it can evolve over 10–15 years or more, gaining additional tertiary notes of leather, dried flowers, and tobacco.

Production
This Sagrantino Passito comes from vineyards in Umbria, where Sagrantino thrives in a mix of clay and limestone soils under a continental climate tempered by hilltop breezes. Grapes destined for passito are usually harvested by hand at full ripeness, carefully selected to ensure only the healthiest clusters are used. They are then traditionally dried—often on racks or in well-ventilated rooms—to concentrate sugars and aromas before pressing. Fermentation proceeds slowly due to the high must concentration, and the wine is typically matured in a combination of stainless steel and/or oak, allowing the intense fruit to integrate with the tannins and develop a layered, harmonious sweetness while preserving vibrant aromatics.

Food & Serving
This dessert wine is a natural partner for dark chocolate desserts, flourless chocolate cake, chocolate truffles, and rich tarts featuring dried fruits or nuts. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Pecorino, Parmigiano Reggiano, or blue cheeses, where its sweetness and structure balance salt and intensity. Serve slightly cool, around 14–16°C (57–61°F), to highlight both freshness and complexity. A brief decant of 15–30 minutes can help the wine open up aromatically, especially as it gains bottle age.

Producer
Lungarotti is one of Italy’s leading family-owned wineries and a pioneer of modern winemaking in Umbria. Founded by Giorgio Lungarotti in the 1960s, the estate played a decisive role in putting Umbria on the international wine map, with benchmark wines like Rubesco and its Riserva version, consistently praised in guides such as Gambero Rosso. Today, his daughters, Chiara and Teresa Lungarotti, lead the company, combining tradition with a strong focus on sustainability—covering the majority of their energy needs by reusing biomass and production byproducts, with the goal of reaching full energy self-sufficiency. Based in Torgiano, Lungarotti is not only a wine reference for the region, but also a cultural hub, with renowned wine and olive oil museums and a five-star wine resort that attract visitors from around the world.
