Quintessa 2019 in Imperial format (6 L) is a commanding expression of Rutherford Cabernet-based red from one of Napa Valley’s most iconic estate vineyards. Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Quintessa shows a deep, saturated ruby-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is immediately inviting and layered: ripe blackcurrant and black cherry are lifted by floral notes of violets and lavender, with subtler undertones of tobacco leaf, cedar shavings, vanilla bean and warm baking spices. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, sleek and beautifully polished, with a silken texture that glides rather than pushes. Dark cherry, cassis and blackberry are framed by hints of cocoa, licorice and caramel, with a gentle dusty minerality that is very typical of Rutherford. The tannins are fine-grained and supple yet structured, supported by vibrant acidity that keeps the wine energetic and precise. The finish is long, soft and slightly savory, with lingering notes of spice, graphite and sweet oak. Already harmonious, the 2019 will reward patience; in an Imperial (6 L) it has excellent aging potential, easily 15–25 years from vintage, with the large format ensuring a slower, more nuanced evolution.

Production
Quintessa is an estate-grown wine from the heart of Rutherford in Napa Valley, where diverse volcanic, alluvial and gravelly soils on gently rolling hillsides and benchland slopes create a complex patchwork of terroirs. The site benefits from warm, sunny days moderated by cool evening breezes from the San Pablo Bay, allowing the grapes—primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and often a touch of Carménère—to ripen fully while retaining freshness. Grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal maturity, then carefully sorted before fermentation. Vinification typically combines small stainless-steel tanks, concrete and oak vessels, allowing each block’s character to be expressed before blending. The wine is aged in high-quality French oak barrels, a significant proportion new, for close to two years, building texture and complexity while preserving the purity of the fruit, before being bottled in large-format Imperials for extended cellaring.

Quintessa 2019 is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes: think grilled or roasted beef, lamb chops, braised short ribs, venison, or duck with dark fruit reductions. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto, roasted root vegetables and aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F); for a young vintage in a large-format bottle, decant generously—at least 2 hours, and up to 3–4 hours for maximum aromatic expression and textural softness.
