Description
Rippon Tinker’s Field Mature Vine Pinot Noir 2017 is a beautifully expressive Central Otago Pinot Noir from one of New Zealand’s most iconic biodynamic estates. Sourced from Rippon’s oldest vines on Tinker’s Field, this wine reflects both the history of the property and the precision of a family deeply committed to place and purity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a vivid ruby-red colour. The nose is intense and layered, with aromas of dark cherry, blueberry, redcurrant jelly, smoked bacon, violet, and a subtle charred, charcoal-like edge.
The palate follows with impressive depth and complexity, unfolding layer after layer of ripe dark fruit, savoury spice, and smoky nuance. The finish is long, persistent, and highly moreish, with the structure and concentration to evolve further over the next several years. It can be enjoyed now, though it will benefit from a few hours of air.
Production
Tinker’s Field is a biodynamically farmed parcel planted in the 1970s, making it home to some of the oldest vines on the Rippon property. The vineyard sits in Central Otago, where the combination of cool climate, high elevation, and stony soils helps preserve freshness while building aromatic intensity. The wine was aged for 17 months in French oak barrels, including 30% new oak, and bottled without filtration.
Food & Serving
This Pinot Noir is an excellent match for duck breast, roast lamb, mushroom risotto, venison, or dishes with smoky or umami-driven elements. Serve at 15–16°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young to let the wine fully open and show its best aromatics and texture.
Producer
Rippon is one of Central Otago’s benchmark wineries and a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in New Zealand. Established by Rolfe Mills and now led by his son, winemaker Nick Mills, the estate has earned a strong reputation for site-driven wines with purity, depth, and a clear sense of identity. Rippon is widely regarded as one of the region’s most important producers, especially for Pinot Noir.
