Description
Rippon Emma’s Block Mature Vine Pinot Noir 2017 is a beautifully expressive Central Otago Pinot Noir from one of New Zealand’s most admired estates. Sourced from the distinctive Emma’s Block parcel, planted on clay-rich, schist-influenced soils overlooking Lake Wanaka, it offers a more feminine, open-knit style while still carrying the depth and complexity that come from some of the region’s earliest vines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a slightly lighter rim and an elegant, transparent ruby hue. The nose is lifted and inviting, with bright raspberry and cherry at the fore, followed by notes of thyme, violets and a subtle peppery edge.
The palate is framed by vivid red fruit and a gentle, refined texture, with just a touch of structure adding definition beneath the silky, velvet-like feel. It is already approachable and open, yet has the concentration and balance to develop beautifully with time in bottle.
Production
Emma’s Block comes from a special parcel within Rippon’s vineyards in Central Otago, where clay and schist soils combine with the cooling influence of Lake Wanaka to create a site with real character. The vines are among the first planted in the region, contributing both maturity and complexity to the fruit.
Harvested with a focus on preserving purity and site expression, the wine is crafted to reflect the delicate, lifted style of the block, while retaining the depth that comes from mature vines and a cool-climate growing season.
Food & Serving
This Pinot Noir is a natural match for roast duck, quail, mushroom dishes, herb-crusted lamb, or grilled salmon. Serve it slightly cool, ideally around 14-16°C, and consider a short decant if drinking young to let the aromatics open fully.
Producer
Rippon is one of Central Otago’s benchmark producers, known for its pioneering role in the region and its strong commitment to biodynamic farming and site-driven wines. Set on a spectacular lakeside property in Wanaka, the estate has earned a reputation for producing some of New Zealand’s most refined and expressive Pinot Noir, with winemaker Nick Mills widely respected for his thoughtful, terroir-focused approach.
