Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello 2020

Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello 2020 is one of California’s most celebrated Bordeaux-style reds, produced from the historic Monte Bello Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains. First made in 1962, it has become a benchmark for age-worthy American Cabernet blends, combining remarkable depth with a refined 13.7% alcohol level. Supplied in an original wooden case when three bottles are purchased.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep ruby-red colour. Its expressive nose opens with ripe plum and blackberry, followed by layers of espresso, black truffle, anise, crushed stone and well-integrated oak. On the palate, it is powerful and full-bodied yet finely balanced, with concentrated dark fruit supported by firm structure and a long, polished finish. Still youthful, the 2020 vintage already offers impressive complexity but has the depth and balance to develop beautifully over many years in bottle.

Production
Monte Bello is located in the elevated Santa Cruz Mountains, where a cool climate and rocky, mineral-rich soils help preserve freshness and lend the wine its distinctive structure. The 2020 is a Bordeaux-style blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot contributing additional fragrance, texture and complexity. Winemaker Eric Baugher matured the wine for 17 months in 100% new air-dried oak barrels, adding savoury spice and depth while maintaining the wine’s elegance.

Food & Serving
Its concentration and structure make it an excellent partner for roasted or grilled beef, prime rib, venison and lamb, as well as dishes featuring black truffle, wild mushrooms or rich reductions. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decanting is recommended, particularly when enjoying the wine young; one to two hours in a wide decanter will help open its layered aromas and soften its youthful structure.

Ridge Vineyards is one of California’s most distinguished producers, with a history at Monte Bello stretching back to the first vintage in 1962. Viticulture at the site began as early as 1886, although production was interrupted during Prohibition. Today, Ridge is recognised internationally for producing terroir-driven, traditionally made wines—above all Monte Bello, a landmark California Cabernet blend known for its elegance, longevity and ability to rival the world’s finest Bordeaux-inspired wines.
