Ridge Vineyards Lytton Springs 2022

Ridge Vineyards’ Lytton Springs 2022 is a benchmark Dry Creek Valley blend and a 50th anniversary edition of one of California’s great Zinfandel classics. Rich, layered, and beautifully composed, it captures the house style Ridge has championed at Lytton Springs since 1972, now carried forward by winemaker Eric Baugher.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep, almost inky color that hints at its concentration and intensity. The nose opens with ripe blackberry, blood orange, pepper, licorice, tobacco leaf, and dried flowers, creating a wonderfully complex aromatic profile. On the palate, it is full-bodied and generous, with wave after wave of dark fruit and spice unfolding across a mouthfilling structure. Zinfandel brings the core of the blend, while Petite Sirah, Carignane, and Mataro add depth, grip, and savory nuance. It already offers plenty of pleasure now, but the balance and structure suggest excellent aging potential over the coming years.

Production
The fruit comes from Lytton Springs Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley, one of Sonoma County’s most respected old-vine sites, where warm California sunshine and well-drained soils help produce concentrated, expressive fruit. All grapes were sustainably grown, destemmed before pressing, and fermented naturally with native yeasts to preserve site character. The wine was then matured for 16 months in American oak barrels, with 17% new oak and the remainder made up of one- to four-year-old barrels, adding subtle structure and spice without overshadowing the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is a superb match for grilled ribeye, smoked brisket, braised short ribs, lamb chops, or richly seasoned barbecue. It also pairs well with hard cheeses and hearty mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young to let the aromatics fully open.
