Ridge Vineyards’ Lytton Springs 2016 Magnum is a benchmark California blend that shows how skillfully selected old-vine fruit can elevate Zinfandel into something deeper, more structured, and more complete. First made in 1972, it has long been one of Ridge’s signature wines, celebrated for its balance, complexity, and the way it reflects each vintage’s personality.

Tasting Notes
Deep and saturated in color, this 2016 Magnum opens with aromas of blackberry, ripe plum, dark cherry, and warm spice, layered with hints of black pepper, licorice, and earthy herbs. On the palate, the wine is generous and full-bodied, with the lush fruit of Zinfandel supported by Petite Sirah’s depth, Carignan’s freshness, and Mourvèdre’s savory complexity, leading to a long, polished finish. Despite its power, the wine is notably harmonious, with firm but well-integrated tannins and enough acidity to keep it lively and focused. The magnum format should support graceful development over time, allowing the wine to gain additional nuance and spice with cellaring.

In 2016, the composition was 69% Zinfandel, 23% Petite Sirah, 6% Carignan, and 2% Mourvèdre.

This is an excellent match for grilled lamb, roast beef, barbecued ribs, braised short ribs, or rich mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for one to two hours if opening young, especially to let the layered aromatics and structure unfold fully.
