Ricasoli 1141’s Castello di Brolio Chianti Classico Brolio Bettino is a polished, characterful expression of Tuscany’s most historic wine region. Named in tribute to Bettino Ricasoli—the “Iron Baron” and the man widely regarded as the father of the Chianti formula—this wine blends tradition and modern finesse from the vineyards surrounding Castello di Brolio in Gaiole in Chianti.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the classic elegance of Sangiovese with a deep ruby hue and lively brightness. The nose is refined and layered, with red cherry, wild berry, floral notes, and a savoury Tuscan edge of earth, spice, and herbs.
On the palate, it is balanced and complex, with juicy red fruit, firm but well-integrated tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, mineral-driven finish. The touch of Abrusco adds depth and structure, while 18 months in large casks lends harmony and subtle spice. This is a wine that can be enjoyed now for its energy and detail, but it also has the structure to develop beautifully with a few years in bottle.
Production
The grapes come from the vineyards around Castello di Brolio in Gaiole in Chianti, in the province of Siena, where a continental climate brings hot, dry summers and cold winters. The soils—rich in limestone, marl, and alberese—give the Sangiovese its precision, tension, and distinctive mineral character. The blend is 90% Sangiovese and 10% Abrusco.
After harvesting, the wine is vinified traditionally in small steel tanks, where it macerates for around 20 days. It then matures for 18 months in large oak casks, followed by static clarification and a further 3 months of bottle ageing. The wine is bottled unfiltered, preserving its authentic texture and depth of flavour.
Food & Serving
This Chianti Classico is a natural match for Tuscan cooking: grilled steak, roast lamb, porcini risotto, game birds, and pasta with rich tomato or meat sauces. It also pairs beautifully with aged pecorino and other hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for around 30–60 minutes if enjoyed young to allow the aromatics and structure to open fully.
Producer
Ricasoli 1141 is one of Tuscany’s most historic and respected wine producers, with roots at Castello di Brolio dating back nearly a millennium. The estate holds a central place in the history of Chianti, not least through Bettino Ricasoli, whose work helped define the region’s classic style. Today, the house is known for combining historical identity with meticulous modern winemaking, and its wines regularly earn top critical acclaim, including 3 Glasses from Gambero Rosso and high scores from major international reviewers.
