Réne Barbier Clos Mogador 2023

Clos Mogador 2023 is a landmark Priorat red from René Barbier, a wine widely credited with helping establish the region’s reputation for world-class, age-worthy reds. The vintage shows the estate’s characteristic Mediterranean power with an especially refined expression of freshness, precision and elegance, produced in a limited quantity of just 28,000 bottles.

Tasting Notes
The wine opens with a deep, concentrated colour and an initially reserved, focused character. Its nose gradually reveals the freshness of spring flowers alongside an expressive layer of Mediterranean herbs, with a sense of purity and energy rather than overt heaviness. On the palate, Clos Mogador 2023 is powerful yet remarkably balanced, with fine-grained tannins, excellent concentration and a clean, precise finish. It is more elegant and composed than some earlier vintages in their youth, while retaining the structure and depth required for long-term ageing. This is a serious, cellar-worthy Priorat that should develop beautifully over many years.

Production
Produced in Priorat, Catalonia, the wine reflects the region’s rugged Mediterranean landscape and demanding hillside vineyards. The 2023 vintage was fermented with 100% whole, uncrushed grapes, preserving freshness and adding nuance to the wine’s structure. René Barbier is gradually reducing the proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah in the blend in favour of Cariñena and Garnacha, while also using fewer barriques to preserve the wine’s natural precision and sense of place.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decanting for one to two hours is recommended when enjoying the wine young, allowing its initially closed aromas to unfold; older bottles should be handled more gently and decanted only if necessary. Its depth and firm tannins make it an excellent partner for slow-cooked beef, roast lamb, game, grilled red meats and richly flavoured Catalan dishes. With its considerable ageing potential, it can also be laid down for many years.
