Description

Quintarelli Primofiore 2023 is the most approachable gateway into the legendary world of Giuseppe Quintarelli, offering a vibrant, characterful red that still carries the unmistakable Quintarelli signature. Blending Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Corvina and Corvinone from the hills of Veneto, it marries classic Valpolicella personality with a touch of Bordeaux structure. As the ‘first flower’ of the estate’s reds, Primofiore has long been the bottle that introduces enthusiasts to one of Italy’s most revered traditional producers.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Primofiore 2023 shows a luminous, deep ruby color with youthful purple reflections at the rim. The nose is immediately expressive: wild cherry, red plum and blackberry interwoven with sweet spices, dried herbs, violet, and a subtle balsamic note. Hints of tobacco leaf, cedar and a gentle peppery lift reveal the Cabernet component, while the Corvina and Corvinone bring a distinctly Venetian sense of bright, tangy fruit. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet layered, with a beautiful interplay of juicy red and dark fruits, savory spice, and fresh acidity. Sour cherry, blackcurrant and raspberry are supported by fine, chalky tannins and a mouthwatering, slightly saline finish. There’s an appealing tension between the ripe fruit and the wine’s lively structure, making it both immediately drinkable and surprisingly serious. While crafted for earlier enjoyment than Quintarelli’s Amarone and Valpolicella, this 2023 Primofiore should evolve gracefully for 6–8 years from vintage, gaining complexity in the form of dried fruit, leather and earthy nuances.

Production
Primofiore is sourced from Quintarelli’s terraced hillside vineyards in the Valpolicella area of Veneto, where calcareous and basalt-rich soils, good drainage and significant diurnal shifts help preserve aromatic intensity and freshness. Yields are kept low, and all fruit is harvested by hand to ensure only perfectly healthy, ripe bunches make it to the cellar. In classic Quintarelli fashion, a portion of the grapes is gently dried (appassimento) to concentrate flavor and add texture, while the remainder is vinified fresh to retain lift and purity. Fermentation takes place with native yeasts in large neutral vats, followed by aging in traditional large Slavonian oak botti, allowing the wine to harmonize and develop complexity without overt oak influence. Minimal intervention and long élevage are hallmarks of the estate’s style, and Primofiore follows that philosophy in a more approachable frame.

Food & Serving
Quintarelli Primofiore 2023 is wonderfully versatile at the table, pairing effortlessly with classic northern Italian dishes such as fresh egg pasta with ragù, mushroom risotto, grilled or roasted lamb, braised beef, and hearty stews. It also shines alongside charcuterie, hard aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Grana Padano, and wood-fired pizzas with salumi or roasted vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C, slightly cooler than room temperature, to emphasize its freshness and aromatic detail. Young vintages benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter to allow the fruit and spice to unfurl, especially if served with richer, slow-cooked dishes.

Producer
Giuseppe Quintarelli is a name spoken with near-reverence in Veneto and far beyond, often referred to as the ‘Maestro del Veneto’ for his role in defining the modern prestige of Amarone and traditional Valpolicella. The family estate, based in Negrar in the heart of the Valpolicella Classica zone, dates back to the early 20th century and has remained steadfastly committed to meticulous vineyard work, low yields and extended aging. Under Giuseppe and now the following generations, Quintarelli has become a benchmark for artisanal, long-lived Venetian reds, inspiring countless producers across Italy. The estate’s wines, from the humble Primofiore to its iconic Amarone, are sought after by collectors and sommeliers worldwide for their depth, purity and unmistakable house style.
