Description
Quinta Sardonia QS 2017 is a striking Ribera del Duero red from one of Spain’s most respected biodynamic estates, crafted outside the formal DO boundaries but very much in the region’s modern top tier. Built around Cabernet Sauvignon with a field-blend spirit, it combines power, freshness, and aromatic complexity in a style that reflects both careful vineyard work and the vision of Peter Sisseck’s influence in the area.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, QS 2017 shows deep, concentrated color with a vibrant core that hints at its ripe fruit and structure. The nose is expressive and layered, offering perfectly ripened dark berries, warm spices, mocha, and subtle floral perfume, all lifted by a sense of freshness.
On the palate, it is explosively aromatic and intensely precise, with generous fruit framed by polished oak, spice, and a long, complex finish. The wine has the concentration and structure to age beautifully, and should continue to develop greater nuance over the next decade or more.
Production
Quinta Sardonia sits in Castilla y León, just outside the official boundaries of DO Ribera del Duero, at altitudes ranging from 400 to 700–800 meters above sea level. The estate covers around 20 hectares, with 17 planted to vines on slopes established in 1999 and 2000, and is farmed according to strict biodynamic principles with compost from the estate, medicinal plant treatments, and work timed to the moon’s cycles. The grapes are harvested carefully, fermented in stainless steel, and then matured for 18 months in new French oak barrels.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast lamb, grilled ribeye, slow-braised beef, venison, or rich game dishes, as well as aged Manchego and other firm cheeses. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least an hour, ideally longer, to allow the aromatic layers and structure to open fully.
Producer
Quinta Sardonia was established in 2000 near Sardón de Duero, not far from Peter Sisseck’s Pingus cellars, and quickly gained attention for the quality of its young-vine wines and its biodynamic approach. The estate’s first vintage, 2002, was a strong debut, and the 2004 vintage made headlines with a 96-point rating from Robert Parker, a remarkable achievement for such young vines. Today, Quinta Sardonia is recognized as one of the region’s most distinctive modern producers, known for combining precision, terroir expression, and ambitious winemaking.
