Description
Quinta Agua Alta Fine White Port is a refined, characterful white Port from the steep, high-lying vineyards of the Douro Valley. Blending traditional Portuguese white grapes—Gouveio, Malvasia, Rabigato and Viosinho—it offers both freshness and complexity, ideal as an aperitif or for creative cocktails. Crafted by the Borges family, who have been making wine here since at least 1838, this is a Port that marries deep heritage with a modern, elegant style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Fine White Port typically shows a bright straw to light golden colour, with a clean, inviting sheen. On the nose, expect aromas of citrus peel, white flowers and stone fruit layered with subtle notes of honey, almond and a touch of spice from its time in wood.
The palate is smooth and generously textured, balancing natural Douro richness with a fresh, lifted acidity. Flavours of ripe pear, baked apple and juicy peach are woven together with hints of orange zest, vanilla and a gentle nuttiness, leading into a pleasantly persistent, slightly off-dry to medium-sweet finish. Enjoyed young, it is vibrant and lively, but with a few years in bottle it can gain additional complexity and a rounder, more honeyed character, making it a versatile white Port for both early drinking and short- to medium-term cellaring.
Production
Quinta da Água Alta sits high on the steep schist slopes of the Douro, in vineyards so elevated and narrow that trucks can’t access many of the terraces—conditions that naturally limit yields and intensify flavour. The traditional Douro white varieties—Gouveio, Malvasia, Rabigato and Viosinho—are typically hand-harvested to ensure careful selection of healthy, optimally ripe grapes. After a gentle pressing, the must is cool-fermented to preserve aromatics, then the fermentation is stopped by the addition of high-quality grape spirit, locking in the natural fruit sweetness. The wine is subsequently aged in a combination of stainless steel and seasoned wood, allowing it to retain freshness while gaining subtle complexity and texture before bottling.
Food & Serving
Quinta Agua Alta Fine White Port is superb as an aperitif, served well-chilled on its own or poured over ice with a slice of citrus and a splash of tonic. It pairs beautifully with salted almonds, marinated olives, soft goat’s cheese, cured meats and savoury canapés. On the sweet side, try it with fruit tarts, citrus desserts or almond-based pastries. For best enjoyment, serve at 8–10°C; a brief 15–20 minutes in the fridge before serving is ideal. Decanting is generally not necessary for a Fine White Port, though pouring it into a small carafe can help open up the aromatics if served at the table.
Producer
Quinta da Água Alta’s history can be traced back at least to 1838, making it one of the traditional properties embedded in the fabric of the Douro. Perched high on steep slopes, it long supplied grapes and wines to some of the major Port houses before deciding, more recently, to bottle under its own name and fully express the character of the estate. Now led by the fifth generation of the Borges family, sisters Louisa and Maria, the quinta combines deep local knowledge with contemporary winemaking expertise—Louisa honed her skills at some of the region’s great houses, while Maria oversees administration and marketing. Since taking the reins, they have quickly earned awards and recognition, positioning Quinta da Água Alta as an exciting, quality-driven producer in the Douro’s modern era.
