Tasting Notes
In the glass, Elegia 2021 typically shows an intense, deep ruby colour with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at its time in oak and its Riserva status. The nose opens with ripe dark berries—blackberry, plum and black cherry—layered with notes of dried figs, sweet spice, vanilla, cocoa, licorice and a touch of Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, this Primitivo is full-bodied and velvety, with generous, sun-ripened fruit wrapped in smooth, well-integrated tannins. Flavours of blackberry compote, macerated cherries and prunes are joined by hints of dark chocolate, tobacco, cloves and a subtle balsamic note. The natural richness of Primitivo is balanced by a fresh line of acidity and a gently warming finish, making the wine both indulgent and surprisingly harmonious. Enjoyable now for its plush fruit and spice, Elegia 2021 also has the concentration and structure to evolve gracefully for another 6–10 years in a good cellar, developing more tertiary notes of leather, dried fruit and savoury complexity.

Production
Produttori di Manduria sources grapes for Elegia from selected vineyards in the Manduria area of Apulia, where old Primitivo vines thrive in sun-drenched conditions, poor, calcareous-clay and red ferrous soils, and cooling breezes from the nearby Ionian Sea. These factors combine to produce low yields of intensely flavoured grapes with excellent ripeness and balance. Harvest is typically done by hand to ensure careful selection of bunches, often from older vines that naturally limit production. In the cellar, the must undergoes temperature-controlled fermentation to preserve aromatics and varietal character, followed by a prolonged maceration to extract colour, tannin and complexity. The wine is then aged in oak—often a mix of large casks and/or barriques—for an extended period, and subsequently in bottle, to meet the Primitivo di Manduria Riserva requirements and to integrate the structure, soften the tannins and build the layered profile that defines Elegia.

Food & Serving
This Riserva is a natural partner for richly flavoured, hearty dishes. Think slow-braised beef or lamb, osso buco, grilled or roasted red meats, game, and dishes featuring porcini mushrooms or truffles. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino or mature cheddar, as well as robust pasta dishes like ragù alla bolognese or baked lasagne. Serve at 16–18°C; in warmer rooms, slightly on the cooler side helps keep the wine’s balance and freshness. Decanting for 30–60 minutes before serving is recommended, both to open up the bouquet and to smooth out the tannins, especially while the 2021 vintage is still relatively young.
