Description
Pierre Péters Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Réserve Oubliée NV is a deeply expressive grower Champagne that marries the freshness of a recent base vintage with the nuance of a decades‑spanning reserve. Crafted entirely from Grand Cru Chardonnay in the Côte des Blancs, it offers both immediate drinking pleasure and a rare glimpse into the estate’s “eternal reserve,” which reaches back to 1988. This cuvée sits at the intersection of precision and complexity, making it a compelling alternative to many prestige bottlings.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Réserve Oubliée pours a bright, pale lemon-gold with a fine, persistent mousse and delicate bead. The nose opens gradually, moving from crisp citrus and orchard fruit into more layered tones of baked brioche, toasted hazelnuts, vanilla pod, and hints of dried apricot and golden raisin. With air, subtle chalk dust, crushed shell, and a faint floral lift add further detail.
On the palate, the wine is at once creamy and incisive, with a caressing texture balanced by vibrant, chalk‑driven acidity. Flavors echo the nose: lemon curd, green apple and white peach are wrapped in notes of warm pastry, roasted nuts, vanilla cream, and dried fruit. The long lees aging and perpetual reserve component bring a savory, almost umami depth, while a distinctive, lip‑smacking salinity runs through the finish and keeps each sip mouthwatering. Degorged in March 2024 with a modest four grams per liter dosage, it is beautifully harmonious now yet structured enough to develop further complexity over the next 5–10 years if well cellared.
Production
The grapes for this cuvée come from Grand Cru villages in the Côte des Blancs, primarily Le Mesnil‑sur‑Oger and neighboring crus, where chalk‑rich soils and a cool, northerly climate produce Chardonnay of remarkable minerality and tension. The non‑vintage blend is based 50% on the 2018 harvest, complemented by an ‘eternal reserve’ that Pierre Péters has been carefully refreshing and maintaining since 1988, adding layers of aged complexity to each release. The fruit is harvested by hand to ensure pristine bunches, then pressed gently, with the base wines undergoing partial malolactic fermentation to balance the naturally high acidity while preserving freshness. Maturation takes place for roughly 18 months in a mix of large oak foudres, stainless‑steel tanks, and concrete vessels (about one‑third in each), building texture and aromatic range without overt oak imprint. After blending, the wine undergoes secondary fermentation in bottle and is aged extensively on the lees under cork, a choice that enhances aromatic complexity and lends a subtle, barrel‑like dimension before disgorgement with a low dosage.
Food & Serving
This refined Blanc de Blancs is a natural partner for pristine seafood—think oysters, scallop crudo, turbot with beurre blanc, or butter‑poached lobster—as well as delicately prepared dishes such as sole meunière, chicken with morels and cream, or a truffled cauliflower gratin. It also shines alongside aged Comté, Parmesan, or a selection of firm, nutty cheeses. Serve well‑chilled but not icy, ideally around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to allow the aromatics to unfold. A gentle pour into white wine glasses—or a brief 15–20 minutes open in the bottle before serving—is sufficient; extended decanting is not necessary, though the wine benefits notably from a little time in the glass.
Producer
Pierre Péters is one of Champagne’s benchmark grower‑producers, a family estate based in the Grand Cru village of Le Mesnil‑sur‑Oger, with a history of bottling estate Champagne that dates back to the early 20th century. Specializing exclusively in Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs, the domaine has become renowned for its precise, mineral‑driven Blanc de Blancs, particularly the famed Les Chétillons. Over generations, the Péters family has amassed prime parcels in Mesnil and surrounding Grand Crus, and their meticulous work in both vineyard and cellar has earned them a place among the region’s most respected vignerons. The Réserve Oubliée, with its unique perpetual reserve stretching back to 1988, is a testament to the estate’s long‑term vision and its commitment to expressing both terroir and time in the glass.
