Description
Petrolo Galatrona 2020 Magnum is one of Tuscany’s most iconic Merlot-based wines, often spoken of alongside the great names of Pomerol. Awarded top scores by leading critics and known for its outstanding depth and elegance, it has earned a reputation as both a collector’s wine and a benchmark for Italian Merlot.
Tasting Notes
Deep, dark ruby in the glass, Galatrona 2020 opens with a refined and expressive bouquet of ripe red berries, cherry, vanilla, toasted almond, liquorice, and a touch of dried mint. As it breathes, the aromatics become more layered and complex, showing impressive precision and lift.
The palate is rich and concentrated, yet beautifully composed, with generous fruit, soft and sweet oak tannins, and a long, elegant finish. There is real power here, but also freshness and balance, suggesting excellent aging potential over many years. The magnum format should support even slower evolution and added complexity in bottle.
Production
Galatrona comes from Petrolo’s vineyard in Tuscany, set in a cool, forested area almost exactly between Florence, Arezzo, and Siena. The estate works according to natural principles, avoiding both organic and inorganic fertilisers and encouraging spontaneous grass growth to help preserve soil health and moisture. The 2020 vintage reflects careful viticulture and precise winemaking, resulting in a pure expression of organic Merlot from one of the region’s most celebrated sites.
Food & Serving
This is a wine for fine dining and richly flavoured dishes such as beef tenderloin, roasted lamb, game birds, truffle risotto, or aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours to allow the bouquet to fully open and the structure to soften.
Producer
Petrolo has become one of Tuscany’s cult estates since the mid-1990s, when Luca Sanjust transformed the property from a more traditional Chianti producer into one of the region’s elite names. Best known for Galatrona and also respected for wines such as Torrione, the estate has consistently received outstanding reviews from critics including Robert Parker and James Suckling, securing its place among Italy’s most admired producers.
