Description
Petrolo Galatrona 2019 Magnum is one of Tuscany’s most celebrated Merlot-based wines, often compared to the great Pomerol estates for its depth, precision, and sheer luxury. Nicknamed by Wine Spectator as “The Pétrus of Tuscany,” it has earned a place among Italy’s true cult wines and remains highly sought after by collectors and serious wine lovers alike.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Galatrona shows a deep, dark ruby-red color that hints at its concentration and richness. The nose opens with layers of ripe red berries, vanilla, and liquorice, backed by a subtle mineral tension and impressive aromatic lift.
On the palate, this is a powerful and immersive wine, combining generous fruit, full-bodied texture, and beautifully ripe tannins. The 2019 vintage offers both immediate impact and the structure to evolve gracefully over time, with the magnum format providing excellent aging potential over many years.
Production
Galatrona comes from Petrolo’s estate in Tuscany, where the vineyards benefit from a carefully managed natural approach that supports balance in the soil and vine health. The estate works without organic or inorganic fertilizers and encourages natural ground cover, allowing grass to grow freely to help regulate nutrients and moisture. The result is a wine shaped by both the region’s character and a meticulous, hands-off philosophy in the vineyard.
Food & Serving
Galatrona is a natural match for premium dishes such as grilled beef, lamb, game, truffle pasta, or rich mushroom-based preparations. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for an hour or more to allow the wine to fully open and show its layered complexity, especially in its youth.
Producer
Petrolo has been one of Tuscany’s standout estates since the mid-1990s, achieving cult status through a string of exceptional releases and high praise from leading critics including Robert Parker and James Suckling. Under the vision of Luca Sanjust, the estate transformed from a producer of more traditional Chianti into one of Italy’s elite names, best known for Galatrona and Torrione. Today, Petrolo is widely regarded as one of the region’s most respected and influential producers.
