Description
Penninger Graphit Rum is a distinctive Bavarian-crafted rum that brings together Caribbean character and German distilling tradition. Inspired by the history of the Hauzenberg-Kropfmühl graphite mine and its hardworking miners, it offers a rum with depth, personality, and a clear sense of place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a warm amber-to-deep golden color with inviting richness. The nose leans toward expressive tropical fruit, soft spice, and the layered sweetness of aged Caribbean rum, with a lively aromatic profile that recalls the bold style of Jamaica rum.
On the palate, it is fruit-forward and full-bodied, combining ripe exotic fruit notes with gentle spice, molasses-like sweetness, and a rounded, warming finish. It is a rum with enough structure to be enjoyed neat, and its aromatic intensity suggests it will continue to show well in the bottle over time.
Production
Penninger Graphit Rum is rooted in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region in Germany, but its style is shaped by a blend of Caribbean rum traditions and Bavarian distilling craft. The name pays tribute to the graphite mine in Hauzenberg-Kropfmühl, whose tunnels run beneath the distillery, and to the miners whose demanding work once formed part of the spirit’s early story. Master distiller Stefan Penninger later revived this tradition, creating a rum with pronounced fruity character and a clear historical connection.
Food & Serving
Best enjoyed neat or over a single large ice cube, Penninger Graphit Rum also works beautifully with dark chocolate, caramel desserts, dried fruit, or spiced pastries. Serve slightly below room temperature to highlight its aromatics, and decanting is not necessary.
Producer
Penninger is a Bavarian producer with a strong connection to local heritage and traditional distilling. The Graphit Rum reflects the company’s ability to combine regional history with a more international spirit style, and Stefan Penninger’s revival of the rum tradition has helped keep this unusual and memorable house specialty alive.
