Description
Parusso Barolo Mosconi 2020 is a powerful, deeply expressive Nebbiolo from one of Monforte d’Alba’s most revered crus. This is Barolo with real tension and drama: intense, structured, and built for those who appreciate depth over simplicity. The Mosconi vineyard is known for producing some of the most muscular and age‑worthy wines in Barolo, and Parusso’s precise, modern craftsmanship brings out every layer of this exceptional site.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Parusso Barolo Mosconi 2020 shows a vibrant garnet core with ruby highlights and the faint brick hue that classic Nebbiolo develops even in youth. The nose is immediately seductive, with dark cherries and macerated strawberries wrapped in notes of rose petals, violet, licorice, and sweet spice. As it opens, more complex layers appear: tobacco leaf, cedar, crushed herbs, tar, and a subtle balsamic lift.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and tightly knit, with the hallmark Barolo structure: firm, finely grained tannins and lively acidity framing concentrated red and black fruit. Flavors of cherry, raspberry, dried plum, and blood orange are interwoven with hints of leather, cocoa, anise, and earthy mineral tones. The finish is long, savory, and persistent, suggesting excellent aging potential. While already appealing with extended aeration, the 2020 Mosconi will reward patience over the next 10–20 years, gaining more silkiness, tertiary complexity, and aromatic finesse.
Production
The Mosconi cru, located in Monforte d’Alba in the heart of Piedmont, is a south to southwest-facing hillside with clay-limestone soils rich in marl, known for giving Nebbiolo both power and depth. Parusso farms these vineyards with meticulous attention to detail, harvesting by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches make it to the cellar. In the winery, the grapes typically undergo a gentle, temperature-controlled fermentation with extended maceration to extract fine tannins, aroma, and structure. Parusso is known for careful handling of the cap and precise oxygen management, followed by aging in oak (often small French barrels) to refine the tannins and build complexity without overwhelming the purity of the fruit or the expression of Mosconi’s terroir.
Food & Serving
This Barolo calls for equally characterful cuisine. Think classic Piemontese dishes such as braised beef (brasato al Barolo), veal shank, game birds, truffle risotto, tajarin with rich ragù, or aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano and mature Pecorino. It also pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, wild mushroom dishes, and earthy, slow-cooked stews. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Barolo stems, and decant for at least 1–2 hours in its youth to allow the tannins to soften and the aromatics to fully unfold. Older bottles (10+ years) can be decanted more gently, mainly to separate sediment.
Producer
The Parusso estate, led today by winemaker Marco Parusso and named for his father Armando, has become one of the most respected and distinctive producers in Barolo. Based in Monforte d’Alba, the family has been cultivating vineyards since the early 20th century and bottling their own wines since the 1970s, steadily building a reputation for precision, vineyard expression, and a thoughtful, modern interpretation of Nebbiolo. Parusso’s holdings in top crus such as Mosconi and Bussia allow them to showcase some of the region’s most prized terroirs. Over the years, their Barolos have attracted critical acclaim for their combination of richness, aromatic complexity, and age-worthiness, solidifying Parusso’s place among the key names shaping contemporary Barolo.
