Description

Ojai Vineyard’s Bien Nacido Pinot Noir is a compelling example of California Pinot with a decidedly European sense of restraint and finesse. Sourced from one of Santa Barbara County’s most respected cool-climate sites, it combines dark-fruited intensity with lifted aromatics, making it both approachable and highly distinctive.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a vivid, polished ruby color. The nose opens with dark cherry, red currant, forest floor, flowers, and spice, gradually unfolding into more exotic, woodsy nuances with a subtle marine-like salinity. On the palate, the wine is elegant yet powerful, with ultra-fine tannins, seamlessly integrated acidity, and a long, layered finish. The fruit is ripe and expressive, but the wine never feels heavy, giving it the balance and detail that should reward another decade or more of cellaring.

Production
Bien Nacido is a cool-climate vineyard in Santa Barbara County, where ocean influence helps preserve freshness and aromatic lift. Ojai Vineyard works with a strong focus on early picking to retain balance and terroir expression, and this bottling was aged for 15 months in French oak, with 30% new barrels, to add structure and complexity without overshadowing the fruit.

Food & Serving
This Pinot Noir is a natural fit for duck breast, roast chicken, mushroom dishes, pork tenderloin, or grilled salmon. Serve it slightly chilled, ideally around 14–16°C, and decant briefly if serving young to allow the aromas to open fully.

Producer
Ojai Vineyard was founded by Adam Tolmach, one of Santa Barbara County’s pioneering winemakers, whose career began after graduating from UC Davis in 1976. After co-founding Au Bon Climat, he established Ojai Vineyard in the early 1980s and has since built a reputation for cool-climate wines marked by precision, restraint, and an ongoing commitment to quality and organic farming.

Probably one of the most mispronounced names of all time (should be pronounced: "Ow-hai"). But a modern classic producer working with a bunch of different grapes, their Pinot Noir from Bien Nacido is another fine example of cooler climate wines of California, or more specifically, the Santa Maria Valley in north Santa Barbara County
