Occidental Bodega Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir 2022 is a powerful yet finely detailed expression of California’s Sonoma Coast, produced from one of the most compelling sites in the Occidental project associated with Steve Kistler. Perched high above the Pacific, Bodega Ridge benefits from cool coastal winds and persistent fog, creating Pinot Noir that combines depth and concentration with remarkable freshness, mineral character and maritime precision.
Tasting Notes
The wine has a deep, vivid colour and opens with an intricate bouquet of blackberry, dark cherry and raspberry, joined by wild herbs, forest floor, black tea and crushed stone. With aeration, notes of truffle, spice, orange peel and sea salt emerge, adding complexity and highlighting the vineyard’s cool coastal origins.
On the palate, dark and red berry flavours are layered and concentrated, supported by beautifully integrated acidity and silky tannins. A distinctive mineral edge and subtle saline undertones bring energy and definition, while the long finish lingers with black fruit, herbs and cool earth. Although approachable with air, this is a structured Pinot Noir with excellent ageing potential over the coming years.
Production
Bodega Ridge Vineyard is situated in the high, cool Sonoma Coast close to the Pacific Ocean, where fog, wind and a rugged maritime climate encourage slow, even ripening and preserve natural acidity. These conditions contribute to the wine’s combination of intensity, freshness and mineral precision. The Pinot Noir is crafted to express the character of this individual vineyard, with careful vinification designed to retain both the purity of the fruit and the site’s distinctive coastal profile.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 14–16°C, allowing the wine to reveal its full aromatic range without losing its freshness. It pairs beautifully with roast duck, pigeon, veal, wild mushrooms and truffle dishes, as well as other refined preparations that complement its earthy and savoury nuances. Decanting for around 30–60 minutes is recommended, particularly when serving the wine young; older bottles may benefit from gentle decanting to remove sediment.
Producer
Occidental is the acclaimed Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir project associated with Steve Kistler, whose work helped establish the region’s reputation for producing world-class, cool-climate Pinot Noir. The project focuses on expressive coastal vineyards, including Bodega Ridge, where challenging conditions yield wines of unusual intensity, elegance and site character. Occidental’s single-vineyard bottlings are widely regarded for their precision, complexity and ability to age gracefully.
