Description
Moric Grüner Veltliner Krainer Sankt Georgen 2023 is a finely etched, terroir-driven white from one of Austria’s most visionary winemakers, Roland Velich. This is Grüner Veltliner in a decidedly “Moric” key: precise, textural and quietly powerful, with a Burgundian sense of depth rather than a focus on primary fruit. Sourced from old vines around Sankt Georgen in Burgenland, it channels the character of its limestone-rich soils into a wine of uncommon clarity and finesse.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Krainer Sankt Georgen shows a pale straw yellow with a faint green shimmer, signalling both youth and freshness. The nose is complex and restrained rather than overtly fruity: think cool white pepper and crushed rock, subtly nutty and smoky undertones, delicate blossom, fresh herbs and hints of ripe pear and quince. There’s a distinct mineral impression from the outset, more about stone and spice than exuberant aromatics.
On the palate, the wine is sleek and finely textured, with a gentle, creamy mid-palate that never feels heavy. The classic Grüner “Pfefferl” comes through as a deep, chalky, almost saline spice, wrapped around notes of yellow apple skin, pear, fennel and a touch of toasted seeds. The acidity is taut and linear, giving the wine drive and length, while a very fine phenolic grip adds structure. Still youthful in 2023, it is already beautifully balanced, but has the stuffing to develop further complexity over the next 6–8 years, gaining more nutty, honeyed and savory nuances with time in bottle.
Production
The Krainer Sankt Georgen bottling is drawn from old Grüner Veltliner vines rooted in the limestone and mixed soils around Sankt Georgen in Burgenland, a relatively cool, breezy sector that preserves vibrant acidity while allowing full phenolic ripeness. Roland Velich farms these sites with a strong focus on expressing place rather than polish, favoring low yields and careful, predominantly manual work in the vineyard, including hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the approach is deliberately low-intervention: gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts and élevage in neutral vessels (often large, old oak or stainless steel) to avoid masking the fruit and minerality. The wine typically spends extended time on fine lees to build texture and complexity, with minimal fining and filtration and a sensitive use of sulfur to preserve purity.
Food & Serving
This Grüner Veltliner is an exceptionally versatile food wine, particularly well-suited to refined, subtly flavored dishes. It marries beautifully with freshwater fish, poached or grilled white fish, shellfish, and classic Austrian vegetable dishes such as asparagus or artichoke. It also works with roasted poultry, veal schnitzel, pork chops with light herbal sauces, and a range of Asian-inspired cuisine where ginger, lemongrass and mild chili appear. Serve at 10–12 °C to highlight its precision and aromatic detail. A short decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply opening the bottle in advance and pouring into large white wine glasses, will help the wine unfurl its mineral and spicy layers.
Producer
Moric is the personal project of Roland Velich, established in Burgenland with the explicit aim of redefining what the region’s traditional varieties can express at the highest level. Initially celebrated for elevating Blaufränkisch to world-class status through old vines, sensitive farming and an uncompromising focus on terroir, Velich later turned his attention to Grüner Veltliner, treating it with the same seriousness and nuance usually reserved for great Burgundy or Northern Rhône whites. Today, Moric is widely regarded as one of the benchmark producers of Burgenland, known for wines that are both intellectually compelling and quietly hedonistic, with numerous critical accolades underscoring their importance in the modern Austrian wine landscape.
