Description
Château Montrose is one of Saint-Estèphe’s most prestigious estates, offering a 2ème Grand Cru Classé wine known for its power, precision, and long aging potential. The 2021 vintage continues the estate’s reputation for depth and structure, combining classic Left Bank character with the freshness and balance of a cooler year.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Montrose 2021 typically shows a deep garnet core with youthful purple reflections. The nose is refined and layered, with aromas of blackcurrant, dark cherry, cedar, pencil shavings, violets, and subtle graphite, often unfolding with hints of tobacco, spice, and wet stones as it opens.
On the palate, it is likely to be firm yet polished, with concentrated dark fruit, vibrant acidity, and the mineral, muscular structure that defines Saint-Estèphe. The finish should be long and savory, supported by ripe tannins that suggest excellent development over time. This is a wine built for the cellar and should reward patient aging for many years.
Production
Château Montrose sits on one of the finest gravel-and-clay terroirs in Saint-Estèphe, close to the Gironde estuary, where the maritime influence helps moderate temperatures and protect the vines. The estate’s vineyards are typically harvested parcel by parcel to capture each block at optimal ripeness, with vinification carried out with great precision to preserve purity, structure, and the distinct identity of the terroir.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with classic red meat dishes such as ribeye, lamb shoulder, beef tenderloin, or duck breast, as well as slow-cooked game and truffle-based dishes. Serve at 16–18°C and consider decanting for 1–2 hours, especially when young, to allow the wine to open and soften.
Producer
Château Montrose is a landmark estate in Saint-Estèphe, classified as a 2ème Grand Cru Classé in 1855 and widely respected for producing some of the Left Bank’s most age-worthy wines. Over the decades, the château has built a strong international reputation for consistency, precision, and cellar-worthy structure, making it one of Bordeaux’s most admired names.
