Description
Montrose 2022 is a commanding, yet disarmingly refined red Bordeaux from one of Saint-Estèphe’s most revered estates. This is classic Left Bank structure wrapped in a modern, almost effortless elegance, delivering both power and precision in the glass. Long considered a benchmark for ageworthy wines, Montrose in 2022 captures the estate’s historic tannic backbone while showcasing a new level of purity and polish that defines contemporary Bordeaux.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Montrose 2022 is intensely deep and opaque, with a dark ruby to almost inky core and a narrow, vibrant rim that hints at its youth and concentration. The nose is brooding and layered, opening slowly with blackcurrant and wild blueberry, followed by violets, graphite, pencil shavings and a subtle note of warm embers and crushed stone. With air, more nuances emerge: cassis liqueur, cedar, tobacco leaf and a faint savory edge that promises complexity over time.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, dense and tightly knit, yet remarkably pure and poised. The core of dark fruit—blackcurrant, blackberry and blueberry—is framed by firm, fine-grained tannins that are authoritative without being austere. There is a striking clarity to the fruit, supported by vibrant acidity and a precise, mineral backbone that carries through a broad, palate-coating finish that lingers well over a minute. This is a profound young Montrose with excellent aging potential: it will benefit from at least 8–10 years of cellaring, and at top level should evolve gracefully for 30+ years in a good cellar.
Production
Château Montrose lies on the gravelly rises of Saint-Estèphe, overlooking the Gironde estuary, where deep gravel, clay and sand soils combine with the cooling influence of the river to produce Cabernet Sauvignon of exceptional depth and structure. The 2022 vintage benefited from meticulous vineyard work, with careful canopy management and an early, selective harvest carried out by hand parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the grapes were sorted with great precision, then vinified in temperature-controlled vats to preserve both fruit purity and terroir expression. The grand vin typically blends a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, and smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, before aging in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new), which lends subtle spice and structure without overshadowing the wine’s dense, mineral-driven core.
Food & Serving
Montrose 2022 is a natural partner for richly flavored, protein-driven dishes that can stand up to its structure and depth. Think classic roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, dry-aged ribeye, venison, slow-braised beef cheeks, or duck with a dark wine reduction; mature hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda also work beautifully. Serve at 16–18°C (around 60–64°F) to highlight both freshness and complexity. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended to allow the wine to unfurl its aromatics and soften the tannins; with age, a gentler, shorter decant to remove sediment will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Montrose is one of Bordeaux’s great names, a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) from the 1855 Classification and a reference point for the Saint-Estèphe appellation. The estate rose to prominence in the 19th century thanks to its gravelly, well-drained terroir and its consistent ability to produce profound, long-lived wines dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. Under modern stewardship, Montrose has undergone significant investment and renovation in both vineyard and cellar, cementing its reputation as one of the Médoc’s most serious and ageworthy properties. Frequently lauded by critics and collectors alike, Montrose is considered among the top performers of its class in recent decades, with vintages like 2022 further reinforcing its status as a titan of the Left Bank.
