Description

Montrose 2020 in demi-bottle format (37.5 cl) brings one of Bordeaux’s most acclaimed recent vintages into a perfectly sized format for intimate dinners or careful tasting. Hailed as a contender to rival the legendary 2016 and surpass 2019, this Saint-Estèphe grand vin is a powerful yet finely sculpted expression of classic Left Bank Cabernet. In half-bottle, it offers serious pedigree, collectible potential and the chance to experience a great vintage with less commitment than a full bottle.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, 2020 Montrose is deep, opaque garnet with a vibrant purple rim, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose is intensely refined, opening with violets and crushed dark berries, then unfolding layers of blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry alongside notes of licorice, clay-rich earth, black truffle and a discreet veil of fine spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and multi-layered, with a seamless, almost effortless sense of power. Dark fruit—cassis, plum and black cherry—drives the core, supported by great purity and energy. The tannins are beautifully powdery and perfectly integrated, lending a muscular yet elegant frame that never feels heavy. Subtle notes of graphite, tobacco, truffle and spice build toward a long, resonant finish. In demi-bottle, it will evolve a bit faster than the 75 cl format, but still has excellent aging potential: it should begin to drink well within 5–7 years from the vintage and continue to develop complexity over the following decade, depending on storage.

Production
Château Montrose sits on one of the prime gravelly ridges of Saint-Estèphe, overlooking the Gironde estuary—an exceptional terroir of deep gravel, clay and sand that naturally favors Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate is known for meticulous, plot-by-plot vineyard work, with careful canopy management and hand harvesting at optimal ripeness. In 2020, strictly selected grapes were sorted both in the vineyard and at the winery before gentle crushing. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled vats, with precise extraction to preserve purity and finesse, followed by maturation in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) to build structure and complexity without overpowering the fruit. The resulting wine combines the depth of great Montrose vintages with striking freshness and definition.

Food & Serving
This 2020 Montrose demi-bottle is a superb partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, venison, duck breast, or braised short ribs. It also shines with truffle-infused dishes, roasted root vegetables, wild mushrooms, or mature hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) for optimal expression. Because it is a young, structured Bordeaux and in half-bottle format, a shorter decant—around 45–60 minutes—is recommended to open the bouquet and soften the tannins, while preserving its precision and freshness.

Producer
Château Montrose is one of the elite estates of Saint-Estèphe, classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Developed in the 19th century on what was once heathland, the property quickly earned a reputation for producing wines of impressive structure, longevity and aristocratic character. Today Montrose is regarded as one of the Médoc’s benchmark properties, consistently rivalling First Growths in top vintages. Under modern, quality-focused ownership and with significant investment in the vineyards and cellar, Montrose has produced a string of remarkable wines in recent decades—of which the 2020 is already considered one of the standout achievements.
