Description
Montrose 2020 in double magnum (3 L) is a towering expression of Saint-Estèphe that many critics place alongside, or even above, the estate’s legendary 2016. This is a monumental, slow‑evolving Bordeaux, captured in a format that’s perfect for long aging and special occasions. With its seamless power, precision and depth, it’s a reference-point vintage for this iconic Left Bank château.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Montrose 2020 shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple hue, hinting at its intensity and youth. The nose is strikingly complex: aromas of violets and dark berries mingle with blackcurrant, licorice, clay-rich earth, black truffle and finely interwoven spice. There’s a sense of both gravitas and lift, with floral notes brightening the more brooding, savory elements.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and multi-layered, with an almost effortless, muscular elegance. Dark fruit—cassis, blackberry and ripe plum—is wrapped in beautifully polished, powdery tannins, backed by remarkable purity, freshness and energy. The finish is long, resonant and saline, leaving notes of graphite, truffle and subtle spice. While already impressive, this vintage is built for the long haul and will reward patient cellaring for decades; in double magnum, expect an even slower, more graceful evolution, with a prime drinking window from roughly 2030 onward and potential well past mid-century.
Production
Château Montrose sits on one of the Médoc’s great terroirs in Saint-Estèphe: deep gravel over clay subsoils overlooking the Gironde estuary, providing excellent drainage, moderating breezes and a natural advantage in warm, dry vintages like 2020. The vineyard, planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, is farmed with meticulous plot-by-plot care, and the fruit for the grand vin is hand-harvested at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, grapes undergo strict sorting before a precision vinification in temperature-controlled vats, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) to refine the wine’s structure, integrate its tannins and preserve its exceptional clarity and definition.
Food & Serving
Montrose 2020 calls for equally noble cuisine: think roast or grilled lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, venison, or slow-braised beef cheeks, as well as dishes featuring mushrooms, black truffle, or root vegetables. It also partners beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Comté or old Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to allow the wine to unfurl; as it matures, a gentle 1–2 hour decant will help separate any sediment and reveal its full aromatic complexity, especially when pouring from this 3 L format.
Producer
Château Montrose is one of the great estates of the Médoc, classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification and long revered as the benchmark of Saint-Estèphe power and precision. Since the 19th century, its gravelly, estuary-side vineyards have produced some of the longest-lived and most compelling wines of the Left Bank, renowned for their depth, structure and resilience in bottle. Under modern stewardship and significant investment in the vineyard and cellar, Montrose has reached a new peak, with recent vintages—2020 among them—regularly ranked alongside the finest wines of Bordeaux and affirming the château’s status as a true First Growth in everything but name.
