Description
Bottled in an impressive 6L imperial format, Montrose 2018 is a striking expression of Saint-Estèphe power and precision from one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates. This is a monumental, densely structured red that showcases the ripe, concentrated personality of the 2018 vintage while remaining unmistakably classic in profile. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, it is a centrepiece bottle built for long-term cellaring and grand occasions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Montrose 2018 is deeply opaque, with an inky purple core and a narrow, vibrant rim that hints at its youth and intensity. The nose is rich and layered, unfolding with aromas of ripe mulberry and dark cherry, intertwined with dark chocolate, violets, and subtle hints of graphite and spice. There is both opulence and refinement here, with the floral and mineral notes adding lift to the wine’s dark, brooding fruit.
On the palate, this is full-bodied, broad, and powerful, with a textured, almost muscular attack that immediately signals serious structure. A sweet, concentrated core of black and red fruits is framed by ripe yet firm, chewy tannins that promise significant aging potential. Despite an elevated alcohol level of over 14.5%, it is impressively well integrated, leaving the impression of depth and energy rather than warmth. The finish is long, persistent, and gently floral, echoing violets and dark berries long after each sip. In imperial format, this wine is poised to evolve slowly and gracefully over decades, revealing increasing complexity and finesse with time in the cellar.
Production
Château Montrose is situated on the gravelly slopes of Saint-Estèphe in Bordeaux, overlooking the Gironde estuary—a classic Médoc terroir of deep gravel, clay, and sand that naturally favors Cabernet Sauvignon and its blending partners. The 2018 vintage benefited from a warm, ripe growing season, allowing for optimal maturity and careful plot-by-plot harvesting at ideal ripeness. In the cellar, the grapes were vinified in temperature-controlled vats, with meticulous extraction to capture both concentration and finesse. The wine was then matured in French oak barrels, a significant proportion new, to build structure, complexity, and age-worthiness while preserving the estate’s hallmark freshness and definition.
Food & Serving
Montrose 2018 is at its best alongside rich, flavourful dishes that can stand up to its structure and intensity: think classic roast or grilled lamb, beef ribeye, game birds, slow-braised short ribs, or hearty dishes with wild mushrooms and truffle. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Given its youth and concentration, decanting for 2–4 hours is strongly recommended if opened in the near term, especially from an imperial bottle, to allow the tannins to soften and the bouquet to fully unfurl.
Producer
Château Montrose is one of the great names of Bordeaux and a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 classification, renowned for producing some of the most long-lived and profound wines of Saint-Estèphe. The estate’s vineyards, planted on prized deep gravel terraces by the Gironde, have long been celebrated for yielding Cabernet-based blends of remarkable power, precision, and aging capacity. Under modern, quality-focused ownership and with significant investment in both vineyard and cellar, Montrose has reaffirmed its status as a benchmark of the Left Bank, regularly crafting wines that rival the region’s top châteaux in both critical acclaim and collector demand.
