This is a monumental, full-bodied Bordeaux, packed with dark fruit, structure and energy, yet remarkably refined for its scale. The half-bottle format makes this iconic vintage more accessible for intimate dinners or shorter cellaring windows, without compromising on the estate’s trademark depth and complexity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Montrose 2018 shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple hue, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose is intense and layered, with rich aromas of mulberry, black cherry and cassis interwoven with dark chocolate, violets, graphite and a touch of cedar and spice. On the palate, this is full-bodied, broad and muscular, with a textured, assertive attack that quickly reveals a sweet core of ripe black fruit. The tannins are plentiful, ripe and firm, giving the wine a powerful framework while remaining polished rather than rustic. Notes of dark berries, cocoa, licorice and floral tones carry through to a long, resonant finish with lingering violet and mineral nuances. In demi-bottle, it will evolve a little faster than standard formats: it can be approached from around 2026, but has the structure to age gracefully for a decade or so if well stored.

Production
Château Montrose sits on one of the most prized gravel plateaus of Saint-Estèphe, overlooking the Gironde estuary, where deep gravel, clay subsoils and the cooling influence of the river combine to produce Cabernet-driven wines of great structure and longevity. The 2018 vintage benefited from a warm, dry growing season, yielding exceptionally ripe, concentrated fruit. Grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, then carefully sorted before vinification. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with meticulous extraction to balance power and finesse, followed by maturation in French oak barriques (a significant proportion new) to refine the tannins and add further aromatic complexity.

Food & Serving
Montrose 2018 is a natural partner for rich, savoury dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, venison, duck breast with a red wine reduction or slow-braised beef. It also works beautifully with truffled dishes, mushroom-based sauces and aged hard cheeses like Comté or matured cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). In demi-bottle, a shorter aeration is sufficient: decant for about 45–60 minutes in its youth to let the fruit and florals fully emerge and to allow the tannins to relax.
